This tasty low-cholesterol meal plan involves "assembling" ingredients more than it does cooking them. Most meals require nothing more complicated than boiling (or microwaving) water!

Racking up only 1200 calories, this tasty low-cholesterol meal plan is a quick and easy way to start your diet and keep you on it. It includes suggestions for breakfast, mid-morning snack, lunch, dinner and dessert.

Remember, your daily calorie requirements may be higher or lower than 1200 calories depending on your weight, age, and activity level.

Make sure to consult your physician and see the section entitled Things to Consider, below, before embarking on any diet.

Recipes are provided for each big ticket item (main course) and sometimes a side in every category.

Breakfast:

1 cup coffee or tea with 2 ounces skim milk

1 serving Pumpkin Oatmeal

1 medium apple

2 small vegetarian sausage links, such as Morningstar Farms

Snack:

1 part-skim cheese stick

Lunch:

Your choice of an 8-ounce sugar-free beverage

1 slice whole-wheat bread

1 tablespoon light plant stenol spread, such as Benecol Light

1 serving Low-Fat Chicken Caesar Salad (with store-bought rotisserie chicken)

Dinner:

1 serving Quinoa and Edamame Salad

1 serving Mediterranean Pita (use reduced-fat feta cheese, and reduced-sodium turkey)

Dessert:

1 serving Banana Berry Smoothie

Tip: These dishes can be made even more heart-healthy by using a non-salt substitute.

Things to Consider

If your doctor permits alcohol on your diet with your current medication, one (5-ounce) glass of red wine will add an additional 127 calories, 5.5 g carbohydrate, 0  calories from fat, 0 g total fat, 0 g saturated fat, 0 mg cholesterol, 0 mg sodium, 0 g fiber and 0.1 g protein.

Pregnant or nursing women should completely abstain from alcohol.
