Department of Education Special Education - Ages 3 - 21

Alabama's office of Special Education Services (SES) oversees disability and gifted education services to children. It monitors school districts for compliance with IDEA and Alabama's state special education regulations. SES handles formal complaints, due process hearings and mediation on special education issues.

State Vocational Rehabilitation Agency

The Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services helps people with disabilities live more independent lives by providing education, support and services to assist them with becoming employed. The department works with middle schools, high schools, and higher education to help students with disabilities access appropriate supports for employment and independence such as job coaching, teaching skills, support in job placement, assistive and adaptive supports and more.

Mental Health Services Agency

The Alabama Department of Mental Health provides services to individuals and families dealing with mental illness, mental retardation and substance abuse. Children’s Rehabilitation Service

Children and adolescents under age 21 who have special health care needs are eligible for the Children’s Rehabilitation Service (CRS) programs. The program also serves people with hemophilia beyond age 21. The CRS provides a wide range of services such as clinical medical services, social services, physical, speech-language, occupational therapy and nutritional guidance.

Children's Health Insurance Program

The Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) provides medical care for children from families who meet low-income guidelines. CHIP also provides health care services for children who have no insurance.

Communication services for people who are deaf and hard of hearing provide assistive and adaptive telephone services that may involve voice-to-text or video sign language services that act as relays between people with disabilities and the hearing community.
