Applebee's Grill and Bar is a casual restaurant that is popular with diners who enjoy a wide variety of comfort foods and entrees served in an easy environment. But is the Applebee's menu healthy? There are a few items that will help you keep your diet on track when you dine there, but they might not be the entrees you would expect.

Analyzing the Applebee's Menu

If you've never been to Applebee's the first thing you might notice when you dine there is the size of the menu.

There are pages and pages of different types of foods to choose from. You'll find appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches, traditional American fare (like burgers and fries) and hearty entrees like pork chops and seafood.

If you trying to count calories, the choices will be overwhelming. And go-to favorites like soups or salads are not necessarily the best choice. If you have the opportunity, check the menu online before you go. This will help you to evaluate Applebee's nutrition facts in advance. But if you can't, then find the Lighter Fare section of the menu that is updated to include foods that are lower in calories.

You can also keep your portion size smaller to keep your diet on track at Applebee's. There are often combo deals at this restaurant. While combining several different menu items might be good for your wallet, you often end up with more food than you need. Order a small item or share a larger entree with a friend to keep fat and calories in control.

One of the most popular menu items at fast casual restaurants is Spinach Artichoke Dip. This warm, creamy dip is served with tortilla chips and often shared by friends before they eat a full entree. Since it includes healthy ingredients (spinach and artichokes) it sounds healthy. But it is not.

A typical order of this savory appetizer provides nearly 1600 calories. According to the Applebee's website, there are only 960 calories in their dip, 58 grams of fat, 14 grams of saturated fat, 91 grams of carbohydrate and nearly 4000 milligrams of sodium. But Applebee's provides no information about the serving size of that food. So if you eat the whole order you may get more calories and fat than you expect.

Boneless Wings are another popular offering at Applebee's. Without any sauce or dressing, the appetizer provides 340 calories, 17 grams of fat, 27 grams of carbohydrate, 20 grams of protein and 900 milligrams of sodium. If you add sauce then add additional fat and calories.

  • Buffalo Sauce: 100 calories, 11 grams of fat
  • Hot Buffalo Sauce: 110 calories, 11 grams of fat
  • Bleu Cheese Dressing: 240 calories, 25 grams of fat
  • Ranch Dressing: 210 calories, 22 grams of fat
  • Honey BBQ Sauce: 110 calories and zero grams of fat

Healthiest Options on the Applebee's Menu

If you want to keep your weight loss plan or healthy eating program on track at Applebee's skip the appetizers and get a single entree to split.  The Lighter Fare menu provides a few options. Each of these large entrees provides under 600 calories. If you split it with a friend or take half home for later, you'll be able to enjoy a diet-friendly meal.

    • Cedar Grilled Lemon Chicken provides 580 calories, 26 grams of fat, 4 grams of saturated fat, 48 grams of carbohydrate and 42 grams of protein. You'll also consume 2440 milligrams of sodium when you eat this meal.
    • The Thai Shrimp Salad provides 370 calories, 19 grams of fat, 3 grams of saturated fat, 32 grams of carbohydrate and 23 grams of protein. You'll also consume 1720 milligrams of sodium.
    • Pepper-Crusted Sirloin & Whole Grains provides 430 calories, 14 grams of fat, 4 grams of saturated fat, 48 grams of carbohydrate and 32 grams of protein. You'll also consume 1860 milligrams of sodium but benefit from 7 grams of diet-boosting fiber.
    • And if you order Shrimp Wonton Stir Fry you'll consume 580 calories, 12 grams of fat, 2 grams of saturated fat, 96 grams of carbohydrate and 24 grams of protein. There are also 2550 milligrams of sodium in this meal.

Unhealthiest Options on the Applebee's Menu

Some of the least healthy items on the Applebee's menu are the salads. However, nutritional information listed on the menu is with dressing. For example, the Oriental Chicken Salad provides 1420 calories and 99 grams of fat. The Crispy Chicken & Cornbread Salad provides1440 calories and 96 grams of fat.If you order the salad without dressing you'll be able to cut some—but not all—of the fat and calories. Many Applebee's salads are full of salty, fatty fried ingredients that are not healthy.

You can also derail your diet by ordering fish at Applebee's. While all fish entrees aren't high in calories, some are. The New England Fish & Chips (Hand Battered Fish Fry) provides a whopping 1990 calories, 137 grams of fat, 24 grams of saturated fat, 134 grams of carbohydrate, 55 grams of protein and 4540 milligrams of sodium.

Not surprisingly, desserts are also going to send your healthy eating program in the wrong direction. The worst dessert at Applebee's is the Blue Ribbon Brownie which provides 1670 calories, 78 grams of fat, 40 grams of saturated fat, 220 grams of carbohydrate and 154 grams of sugar.  Other chocolate desserts provide slightly lower calorie and fat counts, but each will provide more sugar and fat than your body needs.
