Type 2 diabetes is more common in certain ethnic groups such as African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, American Indians, and Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. In addition, if you are at a higher body weight, have a history of high blood pressure or heart disease, or a family history of diabetes, your chances are increased.

The good news is that type 2 diabetes can be prevented or prolonged, therefore, the sooner you get screened and start making changes to your lifestyle, the better. It's important for you to meet with your physician to get screened—only he can make a diagnosis.

Try not to get overwhelmed. Focus on one goal at a time so that you can make long lasting changes that suit your lifestyle and help you to get acquainted to a new way of life. If you are overwhelmed, reach out for help. Get support from loves ones, friends, or others you have the same issues as you. Remember, you are not alone in this and its never too late to change.

By eating a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight, and continuing to exercise, you'll continue to keep your risk low.

If you manage your ABC's—A1C (three month average of your blood sugar), blood pressure, and cholesterol—you can reduce your risk even further. Be a proactive patient and ask your doctor what your numbers are and what they mean. Get a routine physical yearly and discuss your lab results, weight, and blood pressure with your physician. Obtaining this knowledge will keep your risk low and allow you to identify if a change occurs.
