Mason has surged in popularity as a boy's name for the past half-decade, and is now firmly planted in the Top 10 of baby boy names. If parents are looking for a unique name for their baby boy, Mason might not be the way to go right now; it's become almost as common as a first name as it is as a surname.

Mason means simply "stoneworker" or "builder." The name's etymology is rooted in the German word machen, which means "to make."

Mason didn't make it into the Social Security Administration's list of the most popular boys' names until about the past decade, and only recently broke into the Top 10. Although it's been used here and there as a girl's name, Mason is overwhelmingly used as a name for boys today.

The Surge in Popularity

There aren't a lot of clues that suggest why Mason suddenly became such a wildly popular name, except perhaps one in pop culture. Kourtney Kardashian, of the Keeping up with the Kardashians television reality show family, named her baby boy Mason Dash Disick. He was born in 2009, and two years later, Mason was the Number 2 most popular boy's name in the United States.
