Baby shower games

have a bad reputation in many circles. The baby shower diaper game is one that can certainly fit into that category, I certainly used to feel that way about it - until I tried it. This baby shower game was a riot and had every one laughing. Here's what you'll need to get started:

  • newborn diapers
  • variety of miniature candy bars
  • marker
  • microwave
  • platter
  • scraps of paper to write on
  • pens/pencils

Gather up all of your supplies before you get started. This will help you in preparing for the baby shower game and not miss any of the steps.

This baby shower game is best set up before the baby shower, but some steps take a few minutes of prep during the shower.

This is a great coed baby shower game.

Label Each Diaper

The first step is one that is very important. You need to be able to keep the diapers straight. I honestly thought that it would be really easy to tell the diapers apart, even after melting the chocolate, but it was much harder than I anticipated. So, lay out 5-6 diapers, unopened, on a table. Label each diaper with a number or letter. Now you have 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.

On top of each diaper, place a miniature candy bar. Each candy bar should be different. You can either buy the packs of eight fun size candy bars that are single flavors (5-6 varieties) or a big bag of the mini candy bars that contain multiple varieties. (The left overs make great party food, but serve it after you play the game!)

Create an Answer Key

The answer key is something that I didn't think about when I first did this game. But as I started to realize quickly, I wouldn't be able to tell these diapers apart as easily as I thought. I just wrote it on a sheet of paper, then folded it up to make it impossible to tell the answers from the back side.

Place the Candy in the Diapers

Be sure to open each diaper all the way, just as you would if you were putting it on a baby. Place a single candy bar in the bottom of the diaper. If you don't put it in the bottom of the diaper, you'll have a huge mess on your hands.

If you are playing the game later in the day, or if you are traveling to the shower, move on to the next step until just before you are ready to play the game.

Microwaving the Diapers

This step is easy, but you'll want to be careful. The contents of these diapers will be hot (and messy). Place the diaper filled with candy in the center of the microwave, completely open. You will also want to microwave about 30 seconds or less, depending on the strength of your microwave. My microwave is powerful and 30 seconds was way too long. The contents will froth and boil, so be careful not to touch it as you pull the diaper out.

When you pull the diaper out, fold the tabs over, like you were diapering a baby. Carefully mush the center of the diaper from the outside, to squish the contents. This is particularly important if you have a candy bar that is hard or has nuts inside.

If you plan to do this game later in the day you can still microwave hours before, but realize that the diapers will stick together and guests won't be able to see inside and look at the contents.

Time to Play the Baby Shower Diaper Game

Now that everything is set up, it's time to play! First pass out the paper and pens or pencils. You will pass out the diapers one by one. Bring out the platter to shower what the candy bar options are for the game. Start one diaper and when it has been passed 2-3 times, start a new diaper, until all are in play. It will get wild and you will lose control - don't panic! People will start passing diapers back and forth, asking to see certain ones again. That's fine.

At the end of the game, pull out the answer key and ask everyone what they thought each diaper was which candy bar. The variety is amazing. The winner is the one with the most answers right.

If you're doing prizes, you can certainly give one for this game. I also give the rest of the pack of diapers to the mother-to-be.
