What to Wear to Barre Class: Getting Started

Barre Workout Essentials

If you're just getting started with barre workouts, it's important to understand that you don't have to spend loads of money on barre fitness clothing before your first class. It's perfectly acceptable to show up in whatever feels most comfortable, whether that's shorts and a t-shirt or tights and a tank.

That said, every niche fitness class has apparel trends that develop partly out of function and partly out of fashion.  In the case of barre workouts, yoga pants and close-fitting cropped pants are the most common staples because classes focus on making small changes to leg and body position throughout class. When you wear tighter pants, you're able to see the changes you make and correct mistakes more easily than if you were wearing baggy bottoms.

It's also important to realize that barre classes are typically performed barefoot. If you're self-conscious about your feet, consider picking up a pair of studio socks with slip-resistant grips on the bottom, much like these Shashi Sweet socks.

Once you've attended a few classes and you're confident you'll continue, have fun with your wardrobe selections! There are lots of cute barre workout tights and tanks that look every bit as good in the studio as they do on the street. Check out 11 great options here.

In addition to a great pair of stretchy pants and a tank top, it's important to keep "the girls" supported with a high-quality sports bra. You'll also want to keep water nearby to stay hydrated before, during, and after your class, and if you have unruly flyaways that are hard to tame, it never hurts to wear a headband. Check out these picks:

  • Headsweats 3-Inch Endurance Band: This ultra-lightweight headband features sweat-wicking material and a fashionable striped design. The comfort-fit, no-slip design is also perfect for those who are sensitive to tight bands.
  • Alo Moto Leggings: Studio Barre class attendee, Lauren Forgione, swears by Alo Moto Leggings for barre classes, pointing out that they're a favorite of barre enthusiasts at her studio, "I just had a breakfast meeting with Tenley Molzahn, a former Bachelor star who goes to barre at our Encinitas Studio at least three times a week and she was wearing the gray ones!"
  • Avocado Purple Rail Tank: This fun, patterned tank top has a lot going for it. First, it features air mesh-like fabric to keep you cool and dry, a longer hem at the back to keep your seat covered, and wider arm holes to facilitate airflow and show off a quick hint of skin or sports bra underneath. It's the perfect combination of fashion and function.
  • Stelari Free Flow Tank: These Free Flow tanks, offered in four solid colors and 11 different prints, redefine the meaning of "the basic tank." While the cut of the tank is simple, the lightweight, wicking material and the silky-soft feel of the fabric will make you want to stock your closet full. Plus, they're cute enough to wear with jeans when you're not at the studio.
  • Handful's Adjustable Handful Bra: Handful's bras are designed to flatter a woman's figure while also preventing uncomfortable bounce or movement during exercise. The Adjustable Bra is particularly nice during low-impact routines like barre because the narrow straps can be reconfigured three different ways—as an x-back, straight, or halter-style—giving you the flexibility to choose the version that works best for you and your shape. The flat inside seams also prevent unnecessary chaffing or rubbing and the quick-dry fabric keeps you comfortable.
  • Camelbak Chute Vacuum Insulated Stainless Steel Water Bottle: This sturdy water bottle effortlessly combines fashion and function. The stainless steel, vacuum-insulated, double-wall design keeps beverages cold for 24 hours, and hot for six, which means you can keep on sipping ice cold water throughout your class. The bottle is also top rack dishwasher safe, so it's effortless to clean. It's also available in a 40-ounce version that keeps drinks cold for 48 hours.
