Basic Relaxation for Pregnancy, Labor and Childbirth

Relaxation is a basic way to help relieve pain and stress. It is commonly used as a non-drug technique for relieving stress and pain. That said, these methods can also be used in conjunction with pain medications, including epidural anesthesia. There are just a few simple things to know about relaxation.

Three Types of Relaxation

The three types of relaxation are each aimed a specific area. While some methods of relaxation cover all three areas, some methods of relaxation are specific to just one area or another.

The three types of relaxation are:

  • Physical
  • Mental
  • Emotional

Relaxation does take practice. The more you practice relaxation, the easier it is to do, no matter where you are or what you're doing.

Relaxation doesn't take fancy equipment. It comes in a variety of shapes and sizes, not one size fits all. Another benefit to relaxation is that it can fit into anyone's box of tricks, whether you definitely want pain medication, whether you don't want any pain medication or whether you're undecided.

Practice in a variety of setting and using a variety of techniques. There are multiples methods to relax. Not everyone likes every method of relaxation, but by trying many different methods of relaxation, you're sure to find one that works for you. Try all of them and figure out which work for you now. Remember, flexibility is important because what works now might not work in labor and childbirth and vice versa.
