Thinking about signing up for a meal delivery service? There are dozens to choose from, so it's smart to do a comparison before you invest. Many popular commercial diet plans like Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem, and Weight Watchers offer packaged meals that are calorie controlled and delivered to your door. But BistroMD offers a slightly different program. I tried the service and had a chance to taste the food, evaluate the weight loss plan and compare food plan costs.

Use my BistroMD review to decide if it's the right plan for you.

How BistroMD Works

BistroMD works differently than some commercial diet programs that include food delivery. At BistroMD, the weight loss plan is designed around food choices. While the program is built on sound nutritional science, you don't have to understand complicated diet theories to start losing weight. You simply pick out food.

If you sign up for BistroMD, you choose either a 5-day or a 7-day plan. For each day on the plan, you choose a full breakfast, lunch, and dinner from the menus listed on the website.  Snacks can be purchased as an option. Each plan allows for some time "off" so that you can eat out or learn to prepare your own healthy meals at home.

BistroMD meals are shipped once a week via FedEx ground and are delivered to your door. In most cases, a signature is not required so the food can be dropped off when you're not home.

The food comes frozen so you simply pop it into the freezer until the day before you plan to eat it.  The company suggests that you thaw each food container in the fridge for about a day prior to reheating. But if you forget to do that, you can still microwave your meals straight out of the freezer.

If you sign up for BistroMD, you also get access to additional tools to help you lose weight, including access to a health library, tips, and healthy recipes. You can also connect with a BistroMD registered dietitian who can help you to customize meal plans.

Meal Quality and Nutrition

The BistroMD nutritional plan allows for roughly 1,200 calories per day for women and 1,400 calories per day for men. The meals are designed to provide 40-50% of calories from lean protein, 20-25% of calories from healthy fats, and 30-35% from complex carbohydrates. Adjusted meal plans are available for people who are diabetic, or who need a gluten-free or low sodium diet. There is also a meal plan available for women going through menopause.

So how does the food taste? It's very good. I tried BistroMD meals for 4 days and was happy with every meal that I ate. Each meal includes a lean protein, a fruit or vegetable, and grains. Serving sizes were substantial so I never felt like I was eating a "diet meal" and the protein and fiber in each meal kept me satisfied until it was time to eat again.

I was exceptionally impressed with how well the food reheated in the microwave. For most meals, I followed the company's recommendation to refrigerate the meal prior to reheating.

But there were some days when I forgot. One those days the meal went from the freezer to the microwave. But the food reheated evenly and it never tasted like a microwaved meal.

Cost Comparison

Meal delivery programs aren't cheap.  A recent comparison of popular diet delivery plans found that most plans cost from $12/day to $35/day with several plans falling in the $20-$25/day range. BistroMD was the most expensive plan ranked in the survey, but if you choose this plan, you won't need to purchase additional food. Some diet delivery plans require that you purchase additional fresh fruits and vegetables on your own.

This additional food, of course, will increase the total cost of your weekly meals on those other plans.

So what can you expect to pay at BistroMD?  If you choose the 7-day men's or women's program you'll pay 179.95* for the first week (although the company offers lower cost deals from time to time). After the first week, you'll need to add 19.95 for shipping (or more if you live outside of the continental U.S.). For the 5-day program, you'll pay 149.95* and the same shipping fees apply. These two plans do not include protein-rich snacks that are recommended for optimal weight loss results. You can purchase those for an additional fee.

Once you sign up for BistroMD meal delivery, your order will be automatically renewed each week. But orders can be changed or canceled as long as you do so by the deadlines posted on their website.

The Bottom Line

If you are thinking about BistroMD for weight loss, take these pros and cons into consideration:

  • The food quality is very good
  • Shipping is efficient and easy
  • The menu options provide for a wide variety of meals
  • Each meal includes a real fruit or vegetable
  • BistroMD meals feel like complete meals, much more so than frozen entrees that you find at the grocery store.

  • Every meal is frozen and needs to be microwaved. (that means that there are no options for on-the-go meals for people without access to a microwave throughout the day)
  • May be too expensive for some dieters
  • There are no vegetarian, vegan or kosher programs

Every dieter has unique needs and a unique lifestyle. So there is no single diet or meal delivery program that will work for everyone. But I liked BistroMD. The nutritional science made sense to me, the meals were high quality, the ordering process is simple and the website is easy to navigate. If I were looking for a meal delivery service to lose weight, BistroMD is one that I would probably choose.
