Follow these easy step-by-step instructions for how to make a vellum paper Halloween lantern with kids. Vellum is the perfect material for this craft because it lets light shine right through. Once you're done, you can leave them near windows to let the sun shine through or use them at night with flameless LED candles, which are perfect for young school-age children. (For more Halloween safety tips, read, "Tips for Halloween Safety.")

These festive Halloween paper lanterns are not only fun to make with kids, but are the perfect Halloween decorations to put around the house!

To make your vellum Halloween paper lanterns, you will need the following materials:

  • One 8 1/2" x 11" sheet cut in half or two 4" x 5 1/2" sheets of orange vellum paper (Note: Sample packs of pastel and brightly-colored vellum paper can be purchased at fine stationery stores or through online retailers like Paper and More; I love using sample packs because you get a variety of colors for a very affordable price.)
  • black card stock paper or construction paper
  • cat shape cookie cutter
  • fun kids' craft scissors such as paper edger scissors
  • scissors
  • glue stick, double-sided tape, or vellum adhesive tape roller (Note: Avoid using liquid glue such as school glue since vellum will be warped if there is any moisture.)
  • small flameless LED candles

3
Cut a piece of vellum paper in half and fold both pieces.

Take an 8 1/2" x 11" sheet of bright orange vellum paper and cut it in half. Next, take each piece and fold it in half. Then, make a fold about 1/4" wide along the edge of one of the sides on each piece of paper as shown.

4
Tape the edges together to form your paper lanterns.

Using vellum adhesive, double-sided tape, or a glue stick, paste the sides of the lantern together as shown to form the paper lanterns.

5
Trace and cut out the black cat.

Next, take your cookie cutter and trace the cat shape on a piece of black card stock or construction paper. Cut out the cat shape.

6
Glue the black cat onto your Halloween paper lanterns.

Take the black cat and glue it onto one side of the lantern as shown. Your paper lanterns will look like this at this stage.

7
Cut strips of black paper for the edges of the paper lanterns.

Using your paper edger scissors, cut strips of paper 1/4" wide. Trim the strips to fit the edges of your paper lanterns and cut enough strips to paste them onto the top, bottom, and sides.

8
Fold the strips in half and paste onto the edges of the lantern.

Take the strips of paper and fold them in half lengthwise. Using a vellum adhesive roller, double-sided tape or a glue stick, paste the strips of black paper onto the edges of the paper lantern.

9
Your spooky and festive Halloween paper lanterns will look like this.

Once you have finished gluing on all the strips of paper, your black cat paper lantern will look like this. Put a small flameless LED candle inside and enjoy the spooky glow with your kids as they take pride in their handiwork. Happy Halloween!
