Designing a nursery doesn't have to be expensive or time consuming. You don't have to hire a professional interior designer or spend excessive amounts of money on high-end decor. You can certainly do either of those things if you want, but it's easy and fun to create a special room for your son by taking a few baby boy nursery decorating ideas into consideration.

Nursery Themes:

While the gender neutral theme has become a growing trend in nursery decor and baby clothing, it can still be fun to stick to a traditional "boy" theme:

  • Transportation: Transportation themes are extremely popular for a baby boy nursery. Decorate the nursery with a cars and trucks theme. You could focus on tractors as part of a larger farm theme or turn the room into a train station filled with railroad decor. Police car or firetruck accents are also a fun theme to consider for the nursery, especially if you have a police officer or firefighter in the family.
  • Animals: Animal themes are another standby for baby boy nurseries. Jungle themes and farm animals are both popular. A ranch theme with cowboys and horses could incorporate a love of the outdoors.
  • Sports: Sports themes are eternally popular for baby boy nurseries. Create a room with a general sports theme or focus on a specific sport, like baseball or ice hockey. If your partner has a favorite sports team, incorporate memorabilia into nursery decor or paint the walls in the team colors.

If you're looking for a theme that's more unique and unexpected, consider creating a scaled down version of an older boy's bedroom. Create a futuristic nursery with a space theme and accent the room with stars, robots, rocket ships and cuddly monsters. Are you and your partner musicians or avid music lovers?

Encourage a love for music in your little one by painting music notes on the wall, framing vintage records or posters and displaying musical instrument toys your son can play with once he's older.

    Nursery Color Schemes:

A coat of paint can change any room. It's such a quick, affordable way to tie a room together, especially a baby boy nursery. Many parents choose the nursery's color scheme based on the bedding or decor they've already chosen, but you can absolutely pick your paint colors first and design the rest of the nursery from there.

Pastel blue is probably the color that comes to mind when you think of a baby boy's nursery, but it's far from the only color option. Light blue, sage and gray are subdued and masculine. Barn red, navy and and bluish gray are also appropriate for a nursery and likely to blend with the rest of your home. If you're a fan of color, why not go with lime green, orange or royal blue for a contemporary touch?

If you're having trouble choosing colors, remember that most stores offer small paint testers.

Before you commit to painting the entire room, experiment. Paint various color combinations on the walls so you can see how the paint looks in different light through the day.

    Form and Function:

When designing your son's nursery, remember that the room needs to be both functional and attractive. Make sure you have plenty of storage space for diapers, clothes, books and toys. You'll also probably want to leave room for a rocking chair or glider you can sit in during those late night feeding sessions.

Since your little bundle of joy won't stay a baby forever, consider how easily you want your nursery to be updated. Lots of themes can be adapted to reflect the tastes of an active toddler just by changing out a few accessories and replacing the crib with a "big boy" bed. However, updating stenciled walls or furniture that has been hand painted and decorated can be a bit trickier.
