Guide Review - Deaf Culture Our Way

I enjoyed reading this little book, and especially loved the cartoons. This is the third edition, published in the mid-1990s. However, things have changed so rapidly in the deaf community that this book is already outdated even though it is the third edition.

I recommend it more as a historical artifact than as a way to learn about current deaf humor. Indeed, two chapters are devoted to "classic humor," and "classic hazards" of deafness. Even much of the humor in the "current" chapter titled "our unique ways" is largely outdated.

This book would benefit from being updated to add humor based on newer technology, such as video relay services and cochlear implants. Maybe someday a fourth edition will come out. Until then, this is an inexpensive little book that can be appreciated mostly by deaf studies students and anyone who wants to learn about [older] deaf culture.
