This diaper cake makes a great gift, but it also doubles as a diaper shower decoration. Want to make your own? The first thing that you need to do in order to make your own baby shower diaper cake, is to gather the supplies that you will need to make the diaper cake. It is important to note that some of the items will vary depending on how you want your diaper cake to look, what you want it to contain and how tall you want it.

  • Pack of Newborn Diapers
  • Bag of Rubber Bands
  • Two types of ribbon (one wide, one small/medium)
  • Platter or plate
  • Scissors
  • Tissue Paper
  • Baby Toys or other decorations
  • Bottle of Champagne or Sparkling apple cider (optional)

The first thing to do, and this can be done very easily, so it's perfect for kids who want to help, is to roll up your newborn diapers and to secure them tightly with a rubber band. Just do 3/4 of a pack of newborn diapers, you may use more, but you can always go back and add them later and some will need to be loose.

Start the Base of the Diaper Cake

If you are using a bottle of apple cider or bubbly, place it in the center of the plate or platter and begin to build around it with rolled diapers. Use unrolled diapers around the inner edge to smooth the insides. If you are not using the bottle, simply fill the space in the center with additional rolled diapers.

Covering the Base of the Diaper Cake

Once you have enough diapers to fill the base, you will want to cover it with tissue paper. Fold the tissue paper in half, and then again in half. Take scissors and cut a small circle out of the folded center (no edges). Then slip it over the bottle, cut away a bit more if you need to do so. Do not worry if it's messy or not even. This will be covered.

If you are not using the bottle. you can skip the cutting out of the center circle. Simply cover the base in tissue.

Secure the Tissue Paper and Trim for the Diaper Cake

Once the tissue paper is down, take a large rubber band and place it around the middle of the rolled diapers. This will cause the paper to pucker and is not a problem. Try to get the rubber band evenly around the center of the diapers.

Once it is secure, use the scissors to trim excess paper away. You will want to leave enough tissue paper to tuck the edges under the diaper cake base. The edges do not have to be neat.

6
Build Additional Diaper Cake Levels

Once you have the base covered and tucked, begin the process of making a second layer. This is merely a repeat of the first layer, though it will be slightly smaller. Typically a diaper cake is at least two levels, if you are using a bottle, three levels is best to cover the top of the bottle.

Finishing the Additional Layers of the Diaper Cake

You will want to do the tissue paper in the exact same manner that you did for the base of your diaper cake. Again, do not worry about perfect edges, they will be covered.

8
Start Placing the Wide Ribbon for the Diaper Cake

Measure the wide ribbon around each of the layers. It will go directly over the rubber bands, hiding them. Even if you use a sheer ribbon, like I did here, you won't see the rubber band in the end. A wired ribbon works really well for helping to maintain a shape. I secured the ribbon together with glue dots, you can use whatever works best for you.

Place the Small/Medium Ribbon for the Diaper Cake

Using the small/medium ribbon you will repeat the last step, placing this ribbon in the center of the large ribbon. This ribbon should be a complimentary or similar color to the original ribbon.

Add Gifts to Your Diaper Cake

Once you have placed the ribbons, it is time to add toys or baby items to the cake for decoration. Some people use baby toys, as I've done here. You can also have a themed cake, like first aid and include a thermometer, medications, nail clippers, etc.

This was my very first attempt at a diaper cake. I made it in 30 minutes with three little girls "helping." This cake was designed to go with the mother-to-be's nursery theme.
