Do I Need to Wear Sunscreen?

Question:

I have really oily skin and acne. I'm afraid sunscreen will break me out even more. Do I really need sunscreen?

Answer:

You should wear sunscreen every day, even if you have oily skin. Wearing sunscreen every day is probably the single most important thing you can do to keep your skin healthy. If you are using medications that cause sun sensitivity, it is a must!

Forget about thick, smelly creams, though.

You can choose an oil-free option that is light and easily absorbed by the skin. Make sure it is labeled noncomedogenic too. You may even want to choose a moisturizer that contains sunscreen, for a time-saving one-step application.

Choose a product with at least SPF 15. Remember, the higher the SPF, the more protection it affords. Also, make sure it protects from both UVA and UVB rays.

Regular sunscreen use will not only protect you against sunburn but also hyperpigmentation, skin cancer and premature aging. The sun is the skin's No. 1 enemy.

So, as long as you're choosing an oil-free, noncomedogenic sunscreen, you won't have to worry about breakouts. Try a few products to find one the one that really suits you. If you need help, ask your dermatologist or esthetician for their recommendations, and remember to wear your sunscreen daily.
