Exhale: Core Fusion Pilates Plus isn't quite what the title implies. If you are looking for Pilates, you won't find it in this DVD, except in its name. If you're looking for a few quick workouts aimed at flat abs and body toning, then you might enjoy this video.

About Core Fusion Pilates Plus

  • 5 10-minute workouts
  • Workouts have different focuses: abs, butt and legs, more abs, upper-body, cool down and stretch
  • Workouts offered on the DVD with music and verbal instruction or just music and visuals
  • Best for intermediate level exercisers who have some core strength already; not suitable for beginners

  • Short workouts allow you to focus on different body areas
  • Fitness instructors have up-beat energy
  • Easily shows what instructors are doing
  • Taped in an attractive spa setting

  • No real Pilates here
  • Moves and cues lack safety precautions
  • Important cues come late in the exercise instructions
  • Boring techno background music gets annoying

Exhale: Core Fusion Pilates Plus DVD Review

It seems everyone gets to define Pilates for themselves these days. The term is stretched (no pun intended) to mean pretty much anything that has to do with flat abs, period. To me, they're selling Pilates short in a big way. As a Pilates expert, I simply have to draw the line somewhere. In the case of Core Fusion Pilates Plus, this workout DVD is not Pilates, and not even a successful attempt at fusion Pilates.

Why I Don't Think This Is Pilates

I don't see any real Pilates exercises in this DVD - not even derivatives, except near the very end when they present an odd version of the hundred and a set of roll ups where the prep exercise comes after the full roll up. There also seems to be little attention paid to the details of alignment that insure spinal safety and deep core work from the abs.

The exercises provide almost none of the spinal articulation work that is so important in Pilates. I could go on, but I think you get the picture.

Is this a bad video? No. I've given it 2.5 stars because I'm genuinely interested in Pilates, and so are my readers. Core Fusion Pilates Plus claims to be Pilates and isn't. It has more recognizable yoga than Pilates. That said, there might be times when you want to watch a quick fitness DVD and do 10 minutes of butt and leg work or 10 minutes of upper body toning. If you're looking for something like that, then Core Fusion Pilates Plus will definitely serve you.
