As summer approaches and the temperatures start to rise, kids everywhere start to think about one of America’s favorite treats: ice cream. Whether it is waiting for the ice cream truck to come down your street, grabbing an ice cream cone at the local baseball game or scooping it out at home, ice cream always seems to hit the spot.

For kids with food allergies, however, ice cream is not always an option.

Ice cream contains dairy and for those with any milk allergy, it is often not an option. While it is not a true allergy, those who are lactose intolerant, also often find they are unable to eat ice cream.

When someone is lactose intolerant, they are unable to easily digest the lactose, a sugar found in milk, leaving them with excessive gas and often an upset stomach. Additionally, many ice cream flavors contain mix-in’s of cookies, brownies or nuts, which also may affect those with gluten or nut allergies.

Well, fret no more. The marketplace is full of so many great products that will allow even kids with food allergies the chance to indulge in America’s favorite dessert. Take a look at some of these great frozen desserts that will have your kids asking for one more scoop.

Let’s not forget that there are a few other options for those with food allergies who are looking for a frozen treat that is a bit more home-made. Perhaps your kids will want to give one of these a try next time it is time for dessert:

    • Fudgsicle: Take your favorite non-dairy milk of choice, such as soy milk or almond milk.  Pour into a glass and add in your favorite chocolate or strawberry syrup, to make it into a tasty chocolate or strawberry milk. Pour into a popsicle maker and place in your freezer. After a few hours, you will have your very own home-made dairy-free, allergen-free frozen dessert.
    • Frozen banana: Take this nutritious fruit, loaded with potassium, vitamin C and vitamin B6, and remove the peel. Cover in plastic wrap and place in freezer. After several hours take out banana and using a spoon mash into a bowl or cup. Within a short time this tasty frozen fruit will have you thinking you are eating banana ice cream.
