25 Ways Smoking Cessation Makes Me Feel Grateful

Quitting smoking often brings benefits to our lives that go far beyond what we expect.  Members of the About.com Smoking Cessation Support Forum describe some of those improvements here.

  1. I am grateful for the air I am breathing. I am grateful that it doesn't hurt, that I'm not wheezing, or huffing and puffing anymore. Grateful for another chance at making my life more garbage-free.
  2. I'm thankful for fear - overcoming it is such a wonderful process.
  3. I'm learning now to accept and confront negative feelings and deal with them, instead of letting the negativity dictate and run my life. I'm grateful that quitting smoking has taught me to do that.
  4. The self-respect I am earning as a result of quitting is wonderful (and unexpected). Life as a smoker who was committing slow suicide was not easy.
  5. Having the flu no longer means I am dying from cancer. You see, with every little illness as a smoker, I knew (worried) cancer had came to get me.

I am a good role-model for my daughter and her little friends. I am calmer and more relaxed now that I Don't smoke. I appreciate myself and my time so much more.

  2. Each and every day I'm thankful that I was able to stop smoking before my lungs got any worse. The breathlessness is eased, the coughing completely gone.

  8. I am thankful for the inner-strength I knew I had, but never tapped into until I quit for good.

  11. I'm grateful for simplification. The planning that goes into maintaining an addiction is unrelenting. Smoking complicated everything.
