Hats for Babies Who Are Stillborn

Crafting Hats for Grieving Families

When a baby dies in pregnancy it is devastating. There is very little that anyone can say or do to help relieve the pain, even temporarily, but there are things that can be done to say that you care and that you are supportive. One of the things that I have been doing recently, as a way to give back after my own pregnancy losses, is to make baby hats in a variety of sizes to donate to a local hospital.

The hospital gives these hats to families who are suffering the loss of their baby. The hats can be worn for photos and kept as a memorial item, or buried with the baby. The hats come in a variety of sizes and I try to vary the colors. It has been a really wonderful thing for me and helped me feel like I’m giving back.

Here I have compiled a list of patterns for baby hats that would work for this purpose. These are knit and crochet patterns, but there are also other places that could teach you to make some that don’t require the knowledge of either. You can also make small burial pouches, gowns, and other items for babies, as someone who is new to crochet, I have chosen to focus on baby hats, because that’s where my knowledge lies. You can use this handy size chart to help you make various sizes.

I tested this hat and timed myself. As a new crocheter, and working in a car while reading the pattern on my phone, I managed to crank a hat out in about 12 minutes. These are perfect for doing in bulk and you can make many from a single skein. This is going to be my new go-to pattern for donations to my local hospital. (Crochet)
