Grocery shopping can be tricky. You want to grab all the delicious options on the shelves but you also want to make sure you’re making nutritious choices. I’m Hungry Girl Lisa Lillien and I'm sharing five smart food picks you should add to your grocery cart.

If you love pancakes, mixes are an easy way to get your fill but they're often nothing more than carby calories. Thankfully, food companies have caught on and many are creating pancake mixes that are not only relatively low in calories, they’re also high in beneficial nutrients like protein and fiber.

FlapJacked makes an amazing product called Protein Pancake and Baking Mix. Each 1/2-cup serving of the just-add-water mix yields about two 4-inch pancakes, with a total of 200 calories and a whopping 20 grams of protein!

If it's fiber you're after, check out Fiber One Complete Pancake Mix – a 1/2-cup serving yields about three pancakes with a total of around 180 calories and 5g fiber. And a 1/3-cup serving of Hungry Jack Extra Light & Fluffy mix makes three pancakes for just 180 calories. Have your pancakes and eat them too.

Flavored Seltzer Water

Seltzer is the new soda! And with so many amazing sparkling water options out there you won’t even miss sugary sodas. My top pick is Spindrift Seltzer. They have four amazing flavors, each with just 0 - 15 calories per can or bottle. I’m also a fan of Nestle Pure Life Exotics and La Croix. Both are naturally flavored with zero calories. And if you enjoy the taste of soda but don’t want any of the calories that come with it, check out the recently reformulated, all-natural Zevia. It has all the bubbles, none of the sugar!

Crunchy Bean-Based Snacks

When I’m feeling snacky there’s nothing I crave more than some crunch. If you're the same way you'll be obsessed with crispy bean snacks. Not only do they have that satisfying crunch, but they also have a good dose of protein—much better than greasy potato chips. They’re also perfect for snackers who avoid gluten.

Try Crunchmaster Popped Edamame Chips, Enlightened The-Good-For-You Roasted Broad Beans, The Good Bean Roasted Chickpea Snacks, and Cruncha Ma-me Edamame Snacks.

Another great thing about beans? Their filling fiber and protein make them a good fit in any weight-loss diet.

Powdered peanut butter

Powdered peanut butter is honestly life-changing. Made from real peanuts, it has all the flavor of traditional peanut butter but less than half the calories and a small fraction of the fat.

If you want to create peanut butter from the powder all you have to do is add a little water. For a boost of peanut flavor, you can add the powder directly to smoothies, oatmeal, baked goods, pretty much anything!

Jif recently started making peanut powder and Just Great Stuff and PB2 also make amazing versions.

Non-Beef Jerky

Jerky is an incredible on-the-go snack. It’s tasty, full of protein, and easy to toss into your purse. But if you don’t eat beef, you might be used to passing on jerky. Not anymore!

Several companies are making alternative jerkies from other meats like chicken and turkey. There are even meatless versions. There are plenty of varieties to choose from, like Tillamook Country Smoker Pineapple Teriyaki Turkey Jerky, or Simply Snackin’s chicken flavors, Fusion Jerky’s turkey and chicken varieties, and Primal Strips’ vegan flavors.
