How To Celebrate National Relaxation Day

Make This Your Personal Day Of Restoration

If you find yourself wishing you could feel more relaxed, you are far from alone in the desire to create a more peaceful existence.  However, you don't need to worry—there's a lot you can do to create a more relaxed existence. One thing you can do is celebrate National Relaxation Day on August 15th; if today doesn't happen to be August 15th, however, you can make any day your personal Relaxation Day: a day to relax your body and mind, even if just for a few minutes. Why is it so important to celebrate a day of rest? It turns out that many people aren’t as good at relaxing as they would like to be, or as would be healthiest for them, and this lack of relaxation can lead to too considerable amounts of unnecessary stress. (And too much stress can lead to other physical and psychological issues.) Relaxing your body can help you to reverse your stress response; relaxing your mind can help you to approach your problems from a clearer perspective because you’re not simply reacting from a place of stress. Add in the fact that relaxation feels good, and we really don’t need any more reasons to celebrate today, do we?

The following are some ways to celebrate the day, whether you're reading this in time to celebrate on August 15, or have found it during a different time of year and would like to create your own "day of relaxation." Really, any day can be "Relaxation Day," and you should celebrate it as often as you need to. Here's now.

Many people find that the typical meditation style is not their favorite, but don't realize that mixing things up with chocolate, walking, or even music can bring them the benefits of meditation in a way that feels right for them. When you hold tension in your body, your stress response can be triggered, causing you to respond to life's challenges from a more stressed, less proactive way. Learning to physically relax your body when you need to can be an extremely useful skill. Once you've determined where you are holding your tension, learn to release it. Or practice a regular body-relaxation technique like Progressive Muscle Relaxation or yoga and and release full-body tension with ease.

You may not have time to take a “mental health day” today, but today is a day to consider whether you might benefit from one, and plan when and how you would take it. It also helps to know how to turn around a bad day once you feel you're having one. In whatever capacity you can, it's important to be sure each day is a day where you can relax when you need to.
