You might have a gym membership. But how often do you use it? The best gym for you is the one that you actually enjoy and go to on a regular basis. That means you need to focus on making it a comfortable place to be. These are some of my top tips for getting the most out of your gym membership.

How to Get More Out of Your Gym Membership

  • Make it convenient. Take the hassle out of going to your health club. If you want to go more often, it needs to be easy. So join a gym that is close to your home or office. You may even want to ask about multiple locations before you join. If you travel a lot, it's handy to have a gym on the road.
  • Don't avoid the gym because you're short on time. You may not always be able to spend a lot of time at your health club. But that shouldn't be an excuse to skip the gym altogether. Supplement your gym time with activities at home to burn enough calories for weight loss. For example, if you have less than a half-hour to spend at the gym then take a walk tonight after dinner. You can even burn calories while you sit on the couch and watch television!
  • Go low maintenance. Don't wear makeup to the gym. You're there to work out, not model! Wear comfortable, appropriate clothing and a simple hairstyle such as a ponytail. You'll save time in the dressing room and have more time to burn calories.
  • Use your gym time wisely. Do exercises at the gym that you can't do elsewhere. For example, if you're short on time at the gym, do abdominal crunches or body weight exercises at home. That way you can use gym equipment as needed and maximize amenities you would otherwise not have access to.
  • Visit the gym during off-hours. Why wait in line for the treadmill or elliptical? Visit the gym on "off hours" so that you can use popular equipment without waiting. Late morning hours and after 8 p.m. are usually slower times in most gyms. You may even find that you enjoy the peaceful atmosphere better.
  • Keep a gym bag packed. Pack your gym clothes and other essentials in advance. Then keep it near the door or in your car so it is ready to go. When you have a change of clothes, socks and sneakers within easy reach, you can have an impromptu, quick workout whenever you get the chance.
  • Consider working with a personal trainer. If you can't splurge on a multi-session contract with a personal trainer, make an appointment for one consultation. The trainer can set up a fitness regime you can do on your own. Then schedule occasional check-ins to update the plan.
  • Make friends at the gym. You're more likely to go to the health club if you expect to see friendly faces when you're there. Take a class and make friends. If you do, you will begin to associate the gym with an enjoyable, sociable place, not somewhere you "have" to go.

And remember, the more you go to the gym, the easier it is to make it a habit. Make the most of your gym membership to burn more calories every day and lose weight faster.
