How to Make Double Braid Rainbow Loom Bracelets, Part 1

This intricate-looking rubber band bracelet is actually fairly easy to make. The most challenging part is to make sure you get both rubber bands on and off the pins when you are hooking and unhooking.

(Note: Younger children will be able to get the double rubber bands on the pins in the first part of this bracelet pattern, but may need help with the hooking and unhooking in the second part, after the rubber bands are all placed. Older kids and adults may also want to use both hands to move the rubber bands around from pin to pin since double bands are stronger and harder to manipulate than single rubber bands.)

You can also watch this video of how to make a double braid Rainbow Loom bracelet, created by Ally. She does a very good job of explaining how to make this beautiful bracelet.

2
Get a loom and rubber bands to make your double braid bracelets.

Here is what you will need to make the double braid Rainbow Loom bracelets. Katherine Lee

First, get the materials you will need to make your double braid Rainbow Loom bracelets. You will need:

  • 2 Rainbow Looms (or similar rubber band bracelet making kits)*
  • hook
  • rubber bands (You can use 3 different colors for your first one; once you get the pattern down, you can use just one for a monochromatic effect of creating different patterns with more colors; it's up to you!)

*Note: To hook the Rainbow Looms together, simply remove one of the plastic rows from each loom; then move the bottom blue pieces around to join the two looms. Make sure the red arrow is pointing up on both looms and that the left side row is one higher than the right side row when you begin. (See the next photo.)

3
Put the first 2 rubber bands on the loom.

To begin, put 2 rubber bands on the pins as shown. The color you choose for your first band (which is the color that will always go from the bottom pin to the left side) will be your outside color, or the color that will be the border at the top of your bracelet. For this bracelet, that color is lime green.

(Note: You will use double bands for each step in this pattern; that's what gives this bracelet that extra thickness and gives it a substantial feel and style!)

4
Put 2 more rubber bands on the loom.

Next, put 2 more rubber bands of a different color (in this case, blue) on the loom going the other way as shown.

5
Now add 2 more rubber bands in your first color.

Next, add 2 more rubber bands in your outside color (in this case, lime green) as shown.

6
Put 2 more rubber bands in the third color on the loom.

Now put 2 more rubber bands in the third color you chose on the loom, going from left to right as you did with the blue rubber bands (which will now be parallel to these bands).

7
Add 2 more rubber bands in your outside color.

Add 2 more rubber bands in your outside color, again going left.

Continue in this pattern (outside color going left, first inside color going right, outside color going left, second inside color going right, outside color going left, back to first inside color going right, and so on) until you reach the top.

8
Add 2 more rubber bands going right.

Keeping with the pattern, add 2 more rubber bands going right in the first inside color, which in this bracelet is blue.

As you add rubber bands, here is how the loom will look.

Here is what your loom will look like as you keep adding rubber bands in this pattern.

The top of the loom will look like this.

When you reach the top of the loom and put on your last double set of rubber bands, your loom pattern will look like this.

11
Turn the loom around and add a single rubber band.

Spin the loom around so that the red arrows are now facing down toward you and what was the top is now on the bottom.

Take a single rubber band and put it on the bottom most pin on the left side. Using your right hand, pull it to the right as shown. Then take your hook and unhook the green rubber band from the bottom most pin. While you continue to pull the single rubber band to the right, bring the double rubber band you have on your hook over the pulled rubber band and hook it to its other pin.

12
Put the single rubber band on the bottom pin.

Take the single rubber band in your right hand (the one you have been pulling) and put it on the bottom pin.

13
Take the single rubber band on the left pin and bring it to the right.

Now take the single rubber band that's on the left side pin and bring it down with your hook to the pin on the lower right side.

Your rubber bands will look like this at this stage.

At this point, your rubber band and loom will look like this. Add a "c" clip to the rubber bands on this pin.

Now you are ready to begin unhooking and hooking the rubber bands. For the next set of steps, go to Part 2 of How to Make a Double Braid Rainbow Loom Bracelet.
