Are you bored with sandwich bread? Some people swap traditional bread for pita pockets. Since you often find them in health food stores and in healthy restaurants, most people assume that the food is healthy. But is pita bread good for you?

Whole wheat pita bread can be a smart choice. In fact, many dieters use pitas for weight loss. A pita is heartier than bread and can stand up to being stuffed with fiber-rich veggies, hunger-busting protein and even healthy dressings that can help you slim down.


Why Use Pita Bread?

Using pita in your meals is an easy way to increase the number of whole grains. Whole grains are a great source of fiber and fiber can help you lose weight. When you eat more fiber, you feel full for a longer period of time and this can help you eat less.

But not all pitas are made from whole wheat or whole grains. You need to look for the words "whole wheat" on the label. Some brands may advertise that they are made from wheat flour or made from multigrain. But these are not necessarily made from whole wheat.

One large pita provides about 170 calories and 5 grams of fiber.  But it can depend on the brand that you buy. There are some brands that are lower in calories. Joseph's Flax, Oat Bran & Whole Wheat Flour Pita Bread for example has just 60 calories per pita.  Kangaroo brand, on the other hand, provides about 90 calories per pita and 1 grams of fat.

 Choosing a lower calorie pita bread is one of the best ways to cut calories from your sandwich and lose weight.  But there are many other healthy ways to use your pita bread.

These are some healthy ways to use pita bread to lose weight or to make your diet more nutritious.

Greek-Style Pita

  • Pita: 170 calories
  • Feta cheese: 1 oz., 75 calories
  • Cucumbers, chopped: 16 calories
  • Tomatoes, diced: 15 calories
  • Hummus, 2 Tbsp:, 54 calories
  • Lettuce: 0 calories
  • Black olives, 1 Tbsp: 10 calories
  • Total: 325 calories

Stuff all ingredients into your pita. Add salt and pepper if you prefer and enjoy!

(Tip: Heating pita in the microwave for just a few seconds softens it slightly and somehow makes it even tastier.)

Mexican-Style Pita

  • Fat-free refried beans, one half cup: 100 calories 
  • Salsa, 2 Tbsp: 10 calories
  • Avocado, one half cup: 120 calories
  • Lettuce: zero calories
    Total: 230 calories

(Tip: if you are watching your sodium intake, ditch the refried beans and use fresh red beans or black beans instead. Keep in mind, however, that canned beans may have as much salt as refried beans:

How to Make Healthy Pita Chips

Pita chips are a great snack as long as you eat them in moderation. Try these as an alternative to potato chips or tortilla chips. Follow this recipe.

Pita: 170 calories
Olive oil, 1 teaspoon: 40 calories
Salt, pinch
Total: 210 calories

Cut your pita into triangles. Drizzle with olive oil, add pinch of salt. Bake for 10 minutes at 400 degrees until crispy. Hint: you can also use an olive oil alternative to cut calories for weight loss.


Pita bread can be a healthy part of your daily diet. And pita bread can help you lose weight. But what matters most is how you prepare the pita and how much you eat. Use low calorie ingredients and eat in moderation to keep your diet on track.
