Want to Use NuvaRing to Skip Your Period?

Ugh! Do you find having your monthly period to be inconvenient? Do you have period-related medical issues that you wish could just go away? Well, if you use the NuvaRing, I may have a solution for you. NuvaRing use:

  • Gives you effective contraception, so you can decide when and if you become pregnant.
  • Allows you the ability to control when and if you have a period.

Yes, you read correctly! You can actually use your NuvaRing to skip your period. Many women have medical reasons for wanting to skip a period—painful periods, headaches, heavy bleeding, cramping, and PMS. Or maybe you just don't want to deal with your period this month—or ever! Do you have a romantic vacation coming up or an important business trip? Wouldn't it be easier to not have to worry about your period?

Well... you will be glad to hear that skipping your period with the NuvaRing is easy and safe. Since the NuvaRing is a hormonal birth method, there is no real need to have a period. Plus, the period you do get is not even a real period... it's actually called a withdrawal bleed.

What You Will Need When Using NuvaRing to Skip Your Period:

    • At least 2 months of NuvaRings (6 rings in total).
    • A calendar (to keep track of dates).

Instructions For Using NuvaRing to Skip Your Period:

    1. Determine the month that you want to use NuvaRing to skip your period.
    1. Make sure that you are using your NuvaRing the month before the month that you want to skip your period.
    2. After you have inserted your NuvaRing and left it in place for three weeks, take it out on Day 1 of Week 4.
    3. Instead of leaving your NuvaRing out during Week 4, insert a new NuvaRing immediately after you have taken your old one out. This will keep the hormone levels constant—and by keeping your hormone supply steady, you should not have your withdrawal bleed (keep in mind that you may still have some spotting).
    1. As long as you continuously replace your NuvaRing (by inserting a new ring instead of leaving it out during Week 4), you should not have a period.
    2. When you want to have your period again, just take out your NuvaRing at the end of Week 3—do not insert a new NuvaRing during Week 4. Your monthly withdrawal bleed should return.

Yep... That's all there is to it! I told you that skipping your period using the NuvaRing was super easy.

Tips for Using the NuvaRing to Skip Your Period:

So I gave you the instructions for using NuvaRing to skip your periods, but just incase you are still a little nervous, here are some additional tips.

    1. In order skip your period with the NuvaRing, you will need to pick up your NuvaRing prescription at least a week early from the pharmacy (since you will need to insert a new NuvaRing during Week 4—a week earlier than normal). Some insurance companies or pharmacies may not allow you to do this. Check with your insurance company and local pharmacy ahead of time.
    2. Keep track of where you are in your cycle—this is because you must insert your new NuvaRing right after you take your old NuvaRing out (after Week 3).
    3. If you only want to skip one period: Insert your new NuvaRing on Day 1, Week 4 (so you skip your period that week). Continue wearing the NuvaRing for 3 weeks. Take it out at the beginning of Week 4 and do not insert a new NuvaRing that week (you should get your period and then insert a new NuvaRing the following week).
    1. If you want to continue to skip your period, just repeat steps 2-5 above.

Are You Concerned About Skipping Your Period?

I get it... you may be concerned if using the NuvaRing to skip your periods is safe. Research consistently shows that skipping your period not only completely safe, but it also is pretty common. Like I mentioned before, you don't even have a real period when you use NuvaRing (or any hormonal birth control method). This is one of the reasons why continuous cycle birth control pills are becoming more popular.

One last final thought—you may also find it comforting to know that using the NuvaRing to skip your period does not make it any less effective.

You can still expect it to be 91-99.7 percent effective. But remember, the NuvaRing does not offer you any protection against sexually transmitted infections.
