If you and your baby enjoy reading Mother Goose nursery rhymes together, then a Mother Goose party is a wonderful way to celebrate their first birthday. This party theme also works well if you have a no gifts policy since you can ask guests to bring a book to donate to the local library in lieu of a present.

Mother Goose Birthday Party Decorations

The Mother Goose theme has a slightly vintage vibe, so keep this in mind when choosing party decorations.

A red gingham tablecloth sets the stage for your party. Present dishes and silverware in wicker picnic baskets. Fill small tin buckets from a craft supply store with snacks. Print color copies of adorable Mother Goose illustrations on heavy card stock and string them together to make a cute banner.

Mother Goose party supply kits are hard to come by, so this particular theme is a DIY-er's dream. You can sometimes find generalized nursery rhyme decorations at party stores.

Mother Goose Birthday Cake Ideas

The most popular cake choice for a Mother Goose birthday party seems to be a Humpty Dumpty cake. Take inspiration from one of the many different versions of the design found in the Coolest Birthday Cakes gallery.

If you aren't an expert pastry chef, but can tell the difference between salt and sugar, make something less elaborate. Decorate a round cake with yellow frosting to resemble a half moon and add a small toy cow in the night sky for a "cow jumped over the moon" cake.

Create a "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" cupcake tower of cupcakes decorated with star rings or picks.

Mother Goose Birthday Party Activities

Many of the guests at a first birthday party will likely have short attention spans, so any crafts, games or activities you plan to do will need to happen quickly.

Otherwise you'll risk having a bunch of cranky, over-stimulated children.

A puppet show featuring Mother Goose characters would be a great entertainment option for a first birthday. Make a puppet theater out of an old cardboard box or create a puppet theater that your child can enjoy for years to come. If you don't have puppets available, check to see if your local library or a nearby daycare center will let you borrow some for the day.

Coloring is a fun activity for a first birthday party as well.

Mother Goose Birthday Party Favors

Guests don't generally expect party favors at a first birthday, so don't feel obligated. If you still want to put together goodie bags for guests, include items that tie in with the party theme, like a nursery rhyme book. You can find inexpensive board books at dollar stores or you could make your own.

Enchanted Learning has a printable book you could assemble for each child. Star stickers from "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" would also be a cute favor for your goody bag, as would plastic sand buckets and shovels from "Jack and Jill."
