To start, you will need some colored paper or wrapping paper. Solid colors or even white works best--it gives you a base on which you and your child can add whatever you feel inspired to put on to decorate your Valentine box. You will need:

  • Cereal box
  • Double-sided or Scotch tape
  • Scissors
  • Wrapping paper or colored paper (You may want to stick to Valentine colors like red, pink, or white.)

3
Cut the top and front of the cereal box.

Cut the top off your cereal box. Then, cut about 1 1/2 inches on either side of the corners in front of the box and fold down a flap as shown.

Cover with paper.

Cover the box completely with paper. You are now ready to start decorating! You may want to add some hearts using a paper punch (If you don't have a paper punch, you can always fold a piece of paper about an inch along the seam and cut out half-heart shapes; then when you open the paper, you'll have a perfectly symmetrical heart.) A heart punch will make the job go much faster, and isn't very expensive. It's a worthwhile investment, especially if you plan to make Valentine cards for the class. Here's what you'll need:

  • Heart-shaped paper punch
  • Hole punch (If you want a Valentine box with a top flap.)
  • Colored card stock paper (for the top flap)
  • Ribbon
  • Glue dots or glue stick

Get another piece of paper in a different color (preferably heavier card stock weight) and cut and fold it until it goes over the front of the box. Glue this lid to the back of the box.

Next, use a hole puncher to make a hole on the lid and a hole in the front of the box along the top, making sure they line up when the box is closed.
