Often we focus on obstacles and closed doors in our lives, and feel stressed as a result. This is only natural, but studies have found that those who are able to focus on the hidden opportunities that lie within their challenges tend to have more success and happiness in their lives.

How can you turn around a bad day, a major obstacle, or anything in between and turn a disappointment into a triumph? Zero in on what you can control in a situation, even if the aspects you cannot control seem to be far more noticeable. Change the way you view a situation, a practice known as "cognitive reframing." Remind yourself of times in the past when you've overcome obstacles and been stronger for it.

Here are some additional tips on playing a poor hand well.

It Is Not How Much We Have, But How Much We Enjoy That Makes Happiness.

It's Not About Having What You Want, But Wanting What You Have. Copyright Elizabeth Scott

Well, it can be about both, but people so often focus so heavily on what they don't have that they fail to appreciate what they do have, and this often causes stress. Focusing on what we don't have can lead to a feeling of lack, and feeling a sense of lack can make us overindulge in other areas--like emotional eating or other unhealthy behaviors, for example.

Focusing on what we have, on the other hand, can lead to a greater sense of overall gratitude, which can contribute to greater feelings of happiness and emotional wellbeing. Rather than feeling that there's much to do to reach fulfillment, focusing on what we already have can lead to a sense of fulfillment, which can help us to feel more relaxed.

Life Is Like Riding A Bicycle; To Keep Your Balance, You Must Keep Moving.

Maintaining Balance Is Possible Even When You're Busy. Copyright Elizabeth Scott

Much of what we think about when we talk about finding 'balance' is letting go of things in our busy schedule, cutting according to our priorities, and saying no. While these activities can certainly contribute to greater balance in one's schedule, it is not impossible to maintain balance while you are leading a busy lifestyle. (This is great news for those who must work two jobs to make ends meet, are following several important goals, or those who have children, and can't cut out many of the activities in their schedule.)

Rather than focusing on creating free time in your schedule, you can focus on adding activities that bring the right mix of work and play to your life. That's right--sometimes even if it makes you busier, it helps to add activities that you enjoy rather than have a schedule that includes only activities that you find taxing. It's Not That You Look At That Matters, It's What You See.

Our Perceptions Affect Our Stress Levels. Copyright Elizabeth Scott

This means that when we experience or interpret an event in our lives as threatening, it registers as "stressful." However, if we are able to look at things differently, we may be able to prevent the stress response from being triggered. Here are some common cognitive distortions that cause stress, and a strategy that works well for changing our perceptions of stress: reframing.
