Think cereals are only good for breakfast? Think again. This fun cookie recipe for Cherry Dot Cookies using Corn Flakes developed by Kellogg's will appeal to your preschooler's sense of the absurd -- cookies made with cereal? Sure, why not? But not only is cooking with Corn Flakes not uncommon, Kellogg's has compiled a collection, all worth sampling.

A great way to bond spend time with your preschooler while teaching them some important life lessons is to take them into the kitchen with you. While you obviously won't be letting your little one turn on the oven, there are, depending on the recipe, many simple kitchen and cooking-related chores that they can do, including (for tasks related to this recipe, read on below):

  • washing fruits and vegetables
  • cutting soft foods with a butter or plastic knife
  • measuring dry ingredients into cups
  • pouring wet ingredients into bowls
  • mixing batters or dry ingredients together
  • kneading dough
  • tearing greens into small pieces
  • brushing oil or butter onto surfaces with a pastry brush
  • turning pages in a cookbook
  • putting cups into muffin pans
  • sprinkle salt, pepper, or herbs into bowls
  • juice lemons, limes, and oranges
  • peel carrots or cucumbers
  • put silverware into the basket in the dishwasher
  • spread peanut butter or jam onto bread or dough
  • putting cookie dough onto pans
  • wiping down counters or tables when finished

And aside from spending some fun quality time together, there are other benefits too. Kids who help in the kitchen are more likely to eat what they are a part of creating -- something to keep in mind if you have a picky eater. They'll also learn about following directions, cleaning up, and even a little bit on how chemicals can mix together to form something new!

If your preschooler does give you a hand in the kitchen, make sure you let everyone who eats your dish know!

For this Corn Flakes recipe, your preschooler can do the following (with supervision):

  • mix together all of the dry ingredients
  • crush the cereal (put it into a plastic bag and have your preschooler squeeze or knock gently with a rolling pin on a hard surface)
  • cut the cherries into quarters using a butter knife or plastic knife
  • roll out the dough
  • put the cherries on top of the unbaked cookies
  • help clean up by wiping down surfaces
  • serving and eating the cookies!

Happy cooking!
