When you have twins, one of your biggest challenges as a parent is the logistics of transporting them from place to place. As infants, they rest securely in infant carrier car seats. But as they get older (and more mobile), a double stroller is an invaluable piece of equipment. The problem with double strollers is that there a wide array of styles and features, but no one stroller that completely meets the needs of every family all the time. There are great double stroller options for outdoor and extended use, but many of these are heavy, cumbersome, and huge. There are other options that incorporate infant seats but aren't much use once twins get a bit older.

Before You Buy a Double Umbrella Stroller for Twins

For those times when your twins need a quick ride, a double umbrella stroller is a  must-have item. While they may lack the bells and whistles (i.e. the cupholders and sunshades) of more deluxe strollers, their advantage is in their slim profile and ease of use. They're ideal for families on-the-go, especially with toddlers or older babies.

A good double umbrella stroller for twins should:

  • Be easy to set up
  • Weigh less than 25 pounds
  • Easily stash in a car trunk or closet when folded down
  • Comfortably and securely accommodate two same-age children

With less support than other stroller styles, double umbrella strollers are best for older babies, who are able to sit up unassisted. They are a great option throughout the toddler years when you want to ensure that your twins can't run off in opposite directions. And, depending on the weight capacity limit, many families with twins find that they continue to use their double umbrella stroller for several years, especially for activities that require a lot of walking, such as visits to the zoo or amusement park.

How to Use a Double Umbrella Stroller with Twins

Here are some examples of how to use a double umbrella stroller with your twins:

  • Stash it in a closet, and pull it out for a quick walk to the neighborhood park.
  • Leave it in the car, and use it when you need to run a quick errand that would take longer if the twins were running loose.
  • Take it on vacation. It's perfect for travel! Keep the twins contained when you're walking through an airport and then gate check it or put it in the overhead bin once you board the plane.
  • Use it on family outings. Even if your twins are old enough to walk, they may want a break to rest their legs occasionally. When they're not riding in the stroller, it can serve as storage for all the stuff that twins accumulate.

With a mid-range price, it packs solid features into a sturdy frame without bulk or excess weight. Two seats accommodate children up to 35 pounds each. Both seats recline independently and there are two individually expanding canopies for shade or privacy. They even included some bells and whistles such as a cup holder and head rests.

Delta Side by Side

Delta LX Double Umbrella Stroller for Twins.

Delta offers two value-priced models of double strollers. Both are light on weight without being heavy on the pocketbook. The Delta DX Side-by-Side Stroller (Buy at has a 3-point safety harness, cup holder and storage bag. It's extremely lightweight, weighing less than 20 pounds. It features a sunshade, although the "European" style delivers only a sliver of shade and wouldn't provide much protection from the elements. The Delta LX Side-by-Side Double Stroller (Buy at costs about $20 more, but offers some upgrades in padding and the security of a 5-point harness.

Delta DX Side by Side

  • Weight: 19.2 pounds
  • Dimensions: 22.8" wide -x- 18.5" deep - x- 36.8 high

Delta LX Side by Side

AmorosO Twin Baby Stroller

AmorosO Lightweight Double Umbrella Stroller for Twins.

If all you need is a stroller that rolls and has two seats, this AmorosO Twin Stroller (Buy at will meet your needs at a bargain price. There's not much to it, but that is exactly why it may be the perfect option. At only twelve pounds, it is truly the definition of a lightweight umbrella stroller for twins. Even with a slim profile, it manages to offer a sunshade and a net storage bag. But, don't expect much beyond the basics -- two seats and twelve wheels. There's not much padding; the seats don't recline, and a flimsy 3-point harness is the only thing that keeps twins from falling out. This stroller is not a good option for the very young, or the very old. Your twins will have to be old enough to sit in it securely, and you should probably stop using it after they weigh about 25 pounds or so.

  • Weight: 12 pounds
  • Assembled Dimensions: 28" wide -x- 27" deep -x- 35" high
  • Folded Dimensions: Estimated at 16" wide -x- 7" deep -x- 42" high

Kinderwagon Hop Tandem Stroller

The Kinderwagon Hop (Buy at is a unique option among lightweight umbrella strollers because it is a tandem-style (front/back) stroller and not a side-by-side model. I hesitate to include it because it doesn't strictly meet the definition of an umbrella stroller in the way it folds down. But it such a clever design and seems to suit the same purpose with a small footprint and compact design. Note that recommendations for the seats are not equal, limiting your usage with twins. While both seats can hold a child up to 50 pounds, the rear seat (which reclines) is recommended for babies over three months old, and the front seat is recommended for babies over six months old. It's not inexpensive, retailing for over $200.

  • Weight: 21.5 pounds
  • Assembled Dimensions: 20.5" wide -x- 30" deep -x- 42" high
  • Folded Dimensions:  45.5" -x- 12" -x- 15.5."

Maclaren Twin Triumph

Maclaren Twin Triumph
Maclaren Twin Triumph double stroller for twins.

Maclaren double strollers have been a popular product for families with twins, and the Twin Triumph (Buy at is no exception.  While many families choose a lightweight umbrella double stroller as a secondary or occasional stroller, this Maclaren product could easily qualify as a first choice stroller for every day use. With a hefty price tag, you'll need to use it often to get your money's worth. Yet, while it's heavy on features, it is truly a lightweight stroller, weighing only about 23 pounds. It's recommended for babies over six months, but you'll get years of use from it since it is designed to hold children up to 55 pounds each. The seats recline; a padded 5-point harness offers security and comfort, and the price includes a rain cover and tether.

  • Weight: 23.2 pounds
  • Assembled Dimensions: 35.4" -x- 24" -x- 41.1" high
  • Folded Dimensions: 12.4" wide -x- 14.8" deep -x- 42.5" high

Other Strollers to Consider

Lightweight Double Strollers
Other Lightweight Double Strollers to Consider.

To qualify as a lightweight double umbrella stroller for this feature, I only considered strollers that weigh less than 25 pounds, and that both fold flat and compress in width for storage. In addition to the strollers featured here, there are some other options that meet some of the qualifications but aren't strictly a lightweight double umbrella stroller. These include:

  • Chicco Echo Twin Stroller (Buy at Weighs 34.5 pounds.
  • Dream On Me Double Twin Stroller (Buy at Weighs 26.5 pounds.
  • Zoe XL2 (Buy at Although it is super lightweight (only 16 pounds), the closed dimensions are 26" Long -x- 29" Wide -x- 10" Deep. It folds flat but doesn't compress like a true umbrella stroller
  • Inglesina Twin Swift (Buy at Weights 28 pounds.
