Are you considering Lipozene for weight loss? The popular product is a fiber pill that helps you to feel more full so you eat less. Sounds reasonable, right? Unfortunately, it's more complicated than that. If you're thinking about taking Lipozene to lose weight, there are a few things you need to know before you buy.

The Science Behind Lipozene

The Lipozene website is full of references to clinical studies.

They actually even provide three studies on their website. It makes the product seem more legitimate, right? Well, here's the problem. The studies aren't really about Lipozene, they are about a fiber called glucomannan, the primary ingredient in the diet pill. And if you actually read the studies, they aren't very impressive.

The studies that are listed on the Lipozene website are either very old or they don't actually show that glucomannan causes weight loss over the long-term. More current research clinical trials involving glucomannan are equally unimpressive. At best, the results are inconclusive.

For example, one study published in December 2013 in the Journal of Obesity concludes that glucomannan did not promote weight loss when taken for 8 weeks. Another review of current clinical trials published in the journal Nutrition concluded that some studies did show limited weight loss with glucomannan, but no long-term evidence and no change in body mass index.

Because repeated clinical trails have not been able to prove that glucomannan causes weight loss, the National Institutes of Health has determined that glucomannan has "little to no effect on body weight."  The organization does, however, caution users of possible risks of taking the diet pill. They list possible side effects including: loose stools, flatulence, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal discomfort.

They also warn users about potential dangers of taking glucomannan in tablet form.

The Real Lipozene Cost

Dieters will have a hard time determining the real cost of Lipozene. According to the company, you should take 2 pills before each meal. The company recommends that you take the maximum dose of 6 pills per day. But trying to figure out the real cost of that recommended dosage gets tricky. You won't find the real number on the website, so I called the company to get an answer.

According to the customer service reps I spoke to, when you sign up for Lipozene you get a 60-pill supply (2 30-pill trial size bottles). They refer to this as a 30-day supply. But if you take the dose they recommend (6 pills per day), that supply would only last you ten days  After the trial, the company sends you automatic shipments of 60-pill bottles at 29.95 per bottle.  So the total cost, if you take the recommended dose is roughly $90 per month not including shipping or handling

The Lipozene Guarantee - What If You Don't Lose Weight?

If I were a consumer, I'd also be interested to know more about the Lipozene guarantee.

The company says that if you don't lose weight with their product you can get your money back. But in order to return it, you need to contact the company within 30 days and get an authorization number. In addition, the guarantee only applies to internet and TV orders.

And how likely is it that you'll actually get your money back? Not likely at all if you use the company's business rating as an indicator. According to the Better Business Bureau, the Obesity Research Institute, LLC (a for-profit corporation) has a D rating because of the high number of complaints against them.

Weight Loss Alternatives to Lipozene

If I were in the market for a product to help me feel full so that I eat less and lose weight, I'd skip the Lipozene. and eat more fiber. You can get plenty of fiber from natural sources - like fruits, veggies and legumes.  When you get nutrients from real food, you have the security of knowing what you're eating. And even though people often complain about the high cost of fresh produce, it's a lot cheaper than Lipozene.
