6 Ways to Look Better in a Bathing Suit

Are you afraid of going swimsuit shopping? Do you dread trips to the pool or beach? Have you given up on getting into a bathing suit?  If so, you're not alone. According to a recent Harris poll conducted on behalf of Nutrisystem, 32 percent of those surveyed said they hadn't worn a swimsuit in public in more than five years. Twenty percent said they hadn't worn a swimsuit in at least ten years and five percent said that they had never worn a bathing suit.


If you are overweight or trying to lose weight, don't let your fear of getting into a bathing suit stop you from enjoying the beach or the pool. You can learn how to look and feel better in your bathing suit without a major body overhaul. Use these tips to enjoy a happier summer by the water.

How to Feel Better in a Swimsuit

  1. Embrace your inner wallflower  Are you worried that people will stare at you when you go to the beach? Guess what? Many times, everyone else at the pool or the beach is just as uncomfortable as you are. They won't bother looking at you because they will be too concerned about their own swimwear issues. Unless you are wearing bright orange polka dots (not recommended for anyone), you'll probably blend in like a wallflower.  Even skinny bikini-clad beach-goers are often more concerned about themselves than they are about other people on the beach. 
  2. Boost your body image. You can align your mind, body and spirit to create a loveable self-image and feel better in your bathing suit, says holistic healer Phylameana lila Desy.  She provides tips to improve your body image, but she says that addressing a negative attitude is key. "Attitude and change of focus can do wonders for a negative body image." Phylameana says that you should stop focusing on a less-than-perfect body and instead focus on healthy internal practices that build you up from inside.  She uses daily meditation and Tai Chi along with a healthy diet and exercise program. While Phylameana jokingly admits she has some figure flaws that would have "freaked her out" in her 20s and 30s, she is now approaching 60 and has the best body image of her life.
  1. Show off your assets. So what do you do if you hate your thighs?  Show off your shoulders!  What if your tummy causes you trouble? Then show off your legs! You can also get help from the people you love. Take a good friend or two along with you when you try on suits. Let them pick out the swimwear that they think would look best on you. Their less critical perspective might yield some be surprising picks. And if all else fails, get a great pair of sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. These diva accessories will help you protect your face and flatter your figure at the same time.
  1. Spoil your skin (and tan it, too!)  Everyone looks better with smooth, silky skin. Before you hit the beach, make an appointment at the spa to pamper your skin.  Clean, scrub, exfoliate and moisturize to look and feel better instantly. No spa budget? Do it at home! Buy or make simple home skin care products and spend an hour or two making your body feel better before you put on your swimsuit. Then give yourself a good (safe) tan.  Get a top-rated self tanner and use proper techniques to apply it so it looks as though you've been living in Barbados for a month or two. 
  2. Give yourself a quick diet boost. Depending on your weight loss goals, it could be months before you reach your target weight. No one should wait that long to enjoy the beach!
