Maclaren strollers -- or buggies, as they are called in the UK where the company originated -- are well regarded for their sturdy construction and thoughtful features. Because of their steep price and popularity with celebrities and the well-to-do, they also have somewhat of a reputation as a snobby stroller. However, Maclaren offers two solid products in the category of double strollers, and many parents of twins find that the cost of a Maclaren stroller is justifiable, given that it meets their needs for a durable, efficient double stroller.

The Maclaren company was started by Owen Maclaren, a retired aeronautical engineer who was inspired by his baby granddaughter to design the first umbrella-style folding stroller in the 1960's. Maclaren products are recognized for their innovative features, such as the first fold-flat stroller, swivel front wheels, the Duette umbrella double stroller, designer-styled accessories, and a travel system style of stroller that incorporated an infant seat and a stroller.

In 2009, the company recalled all of its strollers after a dozen incidences of injury when fingers got caught in a hinge mechanism. The company issued a free repair kit for its products. (Read more about the recall at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website.) In 2011, Maclaren USA filed for bankruptcy, but its products are still widely available in the United States at retail outlets such as Babies'R'Us as well as online.

Maclaren offers two side-by-side style double strollers appropriate for twins: the Twin Techno and the Twin Triumph

The Twin Techno stroller from Maclaren (compare prices) is the double version of Maclaren's popular Techno model, designed to combine lightweight construction with rugged styling. It features standard Maclaren ammenities such as 5-point harnesses, included raincover, aluminum frame, compact fold, shopping basket, and foot brake.

The Twin Techno is priced higher than the Twin Triumph model. Retailing for $430-$450, it is not an inexpensive option, and is certainly one of the most expensive of the lightweight, side-by-side products. It weighs 26.9 pounds (not including accessories) and measures 31.9"L-x-29.3"W-x-43.3"H. It is appropriate for babies from birth, and can be used with children up to a combined weight of 110 pounds. The seats recline independently and the hoods also operate independently, in the event one twin wants shade while the other prefers sun. The stroller comes with the raincover, two head huggies, shoulder pads, foot muffs and a cup holder.

What makes it different from the Maclaren Twin Triumph:

  • larger canopy, with independent hoods
  • extendable leg rests
  • lockable front wheels
  • 3-position, height adjustable handle
  • carry strap
  • 6-inch wheels
  • cup holder
  • priced about $150 higher
  • taller and slightly wider, but almost 3" shorter front-to-back
  • weighs about 3 pounds more

The Twin Triumph (compare prices) double stroller from Maclaren is a lower priced option than the Twin Techno, retailing for slightly under $300. Designed to be lighter-weight and more portable, it is still an expensive double stroller, given that less fashionable manufacturers offer lightweight double strollers for $150 or less. However, Maclaren is known for rugged construction and durability, and many parents of twins choose to invest $300 in a Maclaren product that will outlast their twins, rather than having to buy multiple products that fall apart long before their twins outgrown their need for a stroller.

Like other Maclaren products, the Twin Triumph offers some standard features. They include double swivel wheels; removable, washable seats; UV-protected viewing window in the canopy; independently reclining seats; 5-point safety harness; compact fold design; shopping basket; included raincover; water-resistant hood; and aluminum frame.

The Maclaren Twin Triumph weighs 23.4 pounds, can carry two children up to a combined weight of 110 pounds, and measures 34.5"L-x-29"W-x-42.5"H.

The Twin Triumph differs from the Twin Techno in several ways.

  • Smaller wheels (4.5" as opposed to 6" on the Twin Techno)
  • Weighs less (23.4 pounds as opposed to 26.9 pounds)
  • Retails for about $300 instead of about $450
  • About 3" longer, front to back, but slightly narrower in width and shorter in height
  • No carry strap or leg rests
  • No cup holder
  • Front wheels don't lock
  • Single canopy with viewing window as opposed to independent hoods
  • Handle does not adjust
