Medical Device Sales Job Description

Medical device sales is a sought-after field in which to work. Many college graduates interview for medical device sales jobs out of college, while more experienced sales reps often try to make a transition into medical device sales. This is because the medical device industry is growing, and therefore, jobs are relatively stable and plentiful for top job candidates.

Medical device sales is a demanding careerĀ but also can be very financially rewarding for top sales people with a very strong work ethic.

Medical devices are often some sort of biomedical implant or other equipment used in a clinical setting. This could include artificial joints implanted by orthopedic surgeons, a heart pacer implanted by a cardiologist, or dental implants used by dentists and oral surgeons, for example. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of different medical devices used in a variety of medical specialties.

A Day in the Life

As in any sales career, there are not many "typical" days. Every day is a new, different day in sales when you're dealing with new clients, existing clients, balancing the tasks of bringing in new business while also managing existing business with excellent customer service. Some companies may divide the responsibilities, but many medical device reps are responsible for both new and existing clients.

Often, medical device sales jobs are "outside" sales jobs, meaning as a sales representative or territory manager, you will be traveling out "in the field" to meet with clients in person.

A typical day would primarily include time on the phone with clients and prospects, as well as meetings and appointments with clients and prospects. Remaining time would entail administrative duties such as replying to emails, setting appointments, sending out proposals or quotes, and other desk work.

Most likely, about once a week or a few times a month, there may be sales meetings or team meetings with your manager or co-workers on your sales team or within your territory. Additionally, you may go to trade shows or conferences for the medical device industry or professional association meetings in the medical specialty your products serve.

Work Environment

The work environment varies because medical device reps spend a great deal of time traveling or in meetings with clients and prospects. Additionally, some medical device reps report to an office when not traveling, while others are based out of a home office to use for administrative work when not on the road.

If much of your travel to your territory is done by car, medical device sales reps may be provided the use of a company car, which is another nice perk of medical device sales jobs.

Depending on the type of medical device you sell, you may be required to spend time in the operating room, advising physicians during surgery on the proper use or installation of your product. This is the case for some orthopedic devices and cardiac products, for example.

Challenges

Frequent travel can be a challenge in terms of managing your schedule as a medical device sales representative.

In addition, meeting sales goals, or "quotas" also can be a stressful part of the job, depending on the circumstances and how realistic or reasonably your goals were set. While medical device sales can often be very lucrative, your income is typically tied directly to your sales volume and percentage of goal achieved. Therefore, if you have a weak month in sales, you will also have a smaller paycheck that month. Some people do not like the variable paychecks that salespeople often receive.

However, successful device sales reps find the perks of the job to be worth the long hours, extensive travel, and pressure to meet goals.

Additionally, they enjoy the variety of being out traveling and in meetings, as opposed to sitting behind a desk all day.
