Freshly Steeped Mint and Lemon Tea

Soothing, flavorful herbal teas are a hydrating option to enjoy along with or in between meals. They're particularly helpful when you're looking to change up your drink options and, more importantly, they boast multiple health benefits—who doesn't want a zero-calorie drink teeming with natural flavors, antioxidants, and stress-busting aromas? Plus, they're a quick and easy DIY project—almost as easy as using a tea bag.

If you grow your own mint, this recipe is a simple way to use up your harvest. Or, use a few sprigs of fresh store-bought mint in your favorite recipe before using the rest of the bunch for a pitcher-full of tea.


  • 1/2 cup fresh mint leaves, packed
  • 1/4 lemon, sliced
  • 64 oz. pitcher hot water


  1. Wrap the fresh mint leaves in a cheese cloth and tie tightly. You can also use a pitcher with an infuser, if you have one.
  2. Add the mint leaves and lemon to an empty pitcher. Fill it to the top with boiling hot water.
  3. Let sit for at least 30 minutes before enjoying.

Ingredient Variations and Substitutions

For a citrusy and naturally-sweetened drink, swap lemon for orange slices.

If you like your flavors stronger, you can use additional mint and lemon to taste.

Cooking and Serving Tips

Serve this tea with ice cubes during the hot summer months. Add the ice after the tea is steeped and cooled, or just refrigerate it before serving.

When using fresh mint, wash the leaves while they are still on their stem, in a bowl under running cold water. Swirl them around to get rid of any dirt or debris. Mint is one of those ingredients that you should wash right before use, otherwise the leaves won't fare well when stored.
