Although it may seem like everyone and their grandmother is already doing yoga, there are still many people who could improve their health and well-being through this practice. To promote yoga, September has been designated National Yoga Month by the United States Department of Health and Human Services since 2008. The Yoga Health Foundation, a non-profit organization based in California, coordinates National Yoga Month events and administers an associated website, www.yogamonth.org.

Events vary from year to year, but there is always a big push to make yoga classes available to new students. Over 2000 independent yoga studios are now taking part by offering a free week of yoga to new students in September and October. The classes can be redeemed by printing out a coupon from the National Yoga Month website and taking it to a participating yoga studio. Each year Yoga Month culminates on September 30 with an event called Time for Yoga. The idea is for people to do yoga at 7pm, no matter where they are in the world. Online yoga sites and related businesses are increasingly getting into the game too. Look for special offers this month at your local yoga studio, favorite yoga websites, and yoga wear retailers.
