As you may know, the low-FODMAP diet can be effective for IBS, but can be challenging to follow. This is because many common foods contain high-FODMAP ingredients -- something that is particularly true for prepared and processed foods. People will find it much easier to be successful on the diet if they have access to easy, convenient food options.

In Australia, where the diet originated, the low-FODMAP food industry appears to be booming.

As the diet has become the treatment of choice in that country, many companies have seen the potential for business growth through offering low-FODMAP food products. Unfortunately, this trend has been slower to catch on in the U.S. To my knowledge, Nicer Foods, a company out of Washington State, is the first U.S. company to offer FODMAP-friendly prepared foods. Let's take a look at what Nicer Foods has to offer.

The Products

1. Be Nice Bars: These convenient protein bars are filled with delicious, nutritious ingredients. If you love the taste of chocolate and peanut butter together (and who doesn't?), you will enjoy these bars. They are low-FODMAP, and free of gluten, corn, dairy and soy, which make them a nice option for anyone who has food sensitivities

2. Infused Oils: Many people who have been on the low-FODMAP diet lament the fact that onions and garlic are not permitted in the Elimination Phase of the diet.

Luckily, through the use of an infused oil, you can enjoy the flavors of onions and garlic without the fructans (a type of FODMAP) that might cause unwanted symptoms. Nicer Foods offers four different types of infused olive oils -- garlic, shallot, lemon and basil.

3. Spice Blends: Most prepared spice blends contain garlic and onions.

Nicer Foods has created three low-FODMAP spice blends -- Indian Butter Chicken, Italian Sausage, and Taco Seasoning. All ingredients are straight from nature - no chemicals or artificial flavorings!

4. Oatmeal Cups: These cups are designed to offer FODMAP-friendly portions sizes. Super-convenient, you only need to add boiling water. They come in two flavors: Pumpkin Seed Raisin Spice and Cranberry Sunflower Seed.

The Company

The company is run by husband and wife team, Kate and Jesse Watson. Kate is a registered dietitian who found that her long years of struggling with IBS symptoms were over when she focused on eating low-FODMAP. She teamed up with her husband to fill the need for low-FODMAP convenience foods. It is a growing company and they have several new food options in production.

My Bottom Line

I am excited by the notion that people who are on the low-FODMAP diet now have some prepared food options.  Most of the convenient foods found in our supermarkets are filled with all sorts of chemicals, not to mention FODMAPs. All of Nicer Foods products have ingredients that seem to have been chosen with care, with an emphasis on being wholesome and nutritious. Therefore, they contain the potential to nourish your overall health, as well as keep your IBS symptoms at bay.
