Is oatmeal a miracle food?

Looking to use your diet to lower your cholesterol? Oatmeal is a food that may help you achieve your goal. The cholesterol-lowering benefits of oatmeal have been well established, and of course oatmeal makes a fantastic breakfast.

How does oatmeal help lower cholesterol?

Jennifer Moll, PharmD, About.com's Cholesterol Expert, says, "It is thought that the oat fibers in oatmeal mix with cholesterol in the small intestine, then bind to the cholesterol molecules and carry it out of the body -- instead of it being absorbed into the blood.

 Oatmeal seems to be most effective in lowering LDL cholesterol (“bad” cholesterol) levels."

Not So Fast!

Although oatmeal can be helpful in lowering cholesterol, some of the ingredients placed in oatmeal as a cereal or other recipes may not be. They would include butter, chocolate, whole milk, and cheeses. Check the labels of instant oatmeal and ingredients for a recipe before you dive in.

Take It One Step at a Time

When starting any diet, it's best to start slowly, introducing and removing one food item at a time. When it comes to starting on a cholesterol-lowering diet, Ellen Slotkin, RD, LDN, About.com's Cholesterol Expert, suggests, preparing your kitchen by throwing out or donating high-cholesterol, saturated fat and junk foods.

Next, she recommends shopping the perimeter of your grocery store where fresh fruits, vegetables, lean meats and low-fat dairy products are found.

Avoid the interior aisles where highly processed foods are usually stored.

When dining out, she suggests looking for heart-healthy icons next to menu items, and researching the menu online (if that's available to you) ahead of time to plan your low-cholesterol meal in advance.

Start a new approach to cooking by using baking, steaming, boiling, broiling, grilling or microwaving techniques.
