For the Love of Babies - Neonatal Intensive Care Book Review

For the Love of Babies: One Doctor's Stories About Life in the Neonatal ICU

I must admit, when it comes to leisure reading, I’m not that good at it. I find it difficult to sit down, focus, and actually become engaged in a book. I have never been an avid reader and never take the time to relax and enjoy a good book. However, when I received a copy of For the Love of Babies in the mail, I sat down and read, and read some more. I actually never put it down. The hours began to pass, and I found myself reading story after story.

I laughed, I cried, and was completely immersed in Dr. Hall’s words. Her compassion and knowledge for her work shines through in every story written. Dr. Hall invites readers inside the world of the Neonatal Intensive Care- an area unfamiliar and often frightening place to most. She gives an insider’s view of life or death moments, everyday miracles, and the tiring dedication of a neonatologist struggling to help even the tiniest of patients survive despite overwhelming odds.

For the Love of Babies has 16 chapters, all different stories highlighting a wide variety of experiences that you may encounter behind the walls of the NICU. Each story is unique in its own way and very moving in the ability to introduce the reader to the side of the NICU not often explored. This book provides the reader with the rare insights into the mind and soul of a doctor we’d all like to have- caring, knowledgeable, smart, highly trained, humble, and immensely human.

You will journey through the eyes of Dr. Hall as she outlines some extraordinary stories of babies and their family’s trials and triumphs. These stories are both heart warming and heart wrenching and will leave you smiling and crying all at the same time. It’s both informative and educational. In addition to the unique stories, there are over 150 note references making it an invaluable resource to both parents and professionals seeking knowledge and support.

This book is full of life lessons, the biggest one being how fragile life really is. These stories celebrate the miracles of modern medicine, mourn its short fallings, and marvels at the strength and resilience of these little babies, their families, and the dedicated people who take care of them. If you ever wondered what it is like in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit; For the Love of Babies will take you there and show you the touching yet unforgettable world of enormous stress, triumph, pain, loss, and happiness that exists behind it all. For the Love of Babies is an amazingly easy to read book that I highly recommended with stories written straight from the heart about babies, parents, and professionals you won’t soon forget.
