If you've received an orthopedic implant (a replacement hip or shoulder, for example) and would like to learn more about the company that manufactured it, that information is just a click or two away. All orthopedic implant supply companies have websites for patients who are using their products (or will be).

If you aren't sure what company produces the implant your ​orthopedic surgeon used or plans to use, ask. Once you have that information you can visit the company website directly. The list that follows will get you started.

Zimmer Biomet

This company was founded in 1927 in Warsaw, Indiana, where its headquarters are still based. It has operations in more than 25 countries around the world. In addition to manufacturing replacement joints for the knee, hip, shoulder, and elbow, Zimmer Biomet makes disc replacements for the neck and back; hardware for correcting spinal deformities such as scoliosis; and breastbone closure called the Sternalock Blu for use after open-heart surgery.

DePuy Synthes Orthopedics

A division of Johnson & Johnson, DePuy Synthes Orthopaedics was founded in 1895 and according to the company website was the "first commercial orthopaedics company in the U.S." and is now a "global leader in orthopaedic devices and supplies, including hip, knee, extremity, cement and operating room products." Fun fact: DePuy also makes a metal plate and screw combination that's used to fix dogs' faulty knees.

Smith & Nephew, Inc.

This Britain-based company has roots as a small pharmacy in the tiny town of Hull, England, first owned and operated by Thomas James Smith in the mid-1800's. When Smith died in 1896, his nephew Horatio Nelson Smith took over the company. According to the Smith & Nephew website, in 1914 the younger Smith met with representatives of the president of France, resulting in a contract to supply surgical and field dressings to soldiers fighting in the war. From here the company grew and by the late 1990s had evolved into a "diverse healthcare conglomerate with operations across the globe, including various medical devices, personal care products and traditional and pioneering woundcare treatments."

Stryker Orthopaedics

"When Dr. Homer Stryker, an orthopaedic surgeon from Kalamazoo, Michigan, U.S.A, found that certain medical products were not meeting his patients’ needs, he invented new ones. As interest in these products grew, Dr. Stryker started a company in 1941 to produce them." From these humble beginnings, as described on the Stryker Orthopaedics website, a robust company with sales of more than $10 billion per year was born.

Wright Medical Group

The first orthopedic product offered by this Memphis, Tennessee-based company was the "street heel"—a rubber heel designed by company founder Frank O. Wright to ease the discomfort and potential back problems associated with walking on the hard steel heel of a leg cast. Today, Wright Medical Group provides "surgical solutions" for the shoulder, wrist, elbow, hand, foot, and ankle.
