Being able to tell someone you are pregnant is usually a positive experience. This is so much so that many families decide to tell people about their pregnancy in really fun and creative ways.

For some, the more over-the-top the better. Since having a baby really changes your life, why wouldn't you want this to be a special moment?

How to Announce You're Pregnant: Making It Memorable

Not all pregnancy announcements are created equal.

There are a few things to consider when you are deciding to tell someone about your pregnancy, including:

  • Who are you telling? It can make a huge difference to remember that you might tell your partner that you are pregnant very differently from the way you might tell your grandma.
  • Where are you telling them? Remember the old cliche of breaking up with someone in a public place to reduce the chance of an outburst? This is the reverse. If you think the person is going to be incredibly excited and scream with joy, think about a setting where that kind of behavior might be appropriate. A library or when you are sitting as audience members to watch a play might not the be right time, no matter how much you're wanting to blurt out the good news.
  • When are you telling them? Be considerate when you're looking to tell someone such news. Consider the time of day, are they likely to be coming home from work all tired and agitated from the long drive, or could they be distracted by the having just gotten their own good news about something else? Bad news? All of these things can affect the response that you get.
  • What do you anticipate their response to be? Look, if you know that the response is not going to be a super positive one, for whatever reason, just maybe consider toning it down or not bothering to waste a lot of energy on these types of people that may be in your life. For example, if great aunt Ethel is grumpy about everything, consider waiting to tell her later in your pregnancy and perhaps over the phone.
  • How do you want to remember it? Seeing other people's reactions is fun, but the most important aspect of a pregnancy announcement is all the love and happiness you want to feel from the important people in your life. That's the feeling you're really going to remember, though it really all depends on your preferences. Do you want a big surprise announcement? Maybe you want to make a video that your child will one day get to see? Perhaps you just want a big party, good food and lots of guessing games as to the theme of the party. There really is no limit to the type of announcement you want. Just consider what makes you happy and why you are doing it. With a bit of creativity, you can pull together a memorable and happy announcement.
