The Questions You Need to Ask During Plastic Surgery Consultations

10 Important Items You Shouldn't Be Afraid to Ask

The decision to have plastic surgery isn’t always necessarily an easy one. For many, it can be a very stressful process, especially since it’s a decision that remains with you for years, and possibly your whole life. By choosing a qualified and experienced surgeon, you greatly increase your chances of getting the results you desire.

Here is a handy list of questions that you should bring along with you during your consultation to help you decide on a plastic surgeon, if you plan to go ahead with the procedure.

Hopefully, getting the “right” answers to these questions can help put you at ease.

Getting a "yes" to this question is one of the BEST ways for you to feel secure knowing that this doctor is qualified and your procedure will be performed in a safe setting.

How often do you perform the procedure(s) I desire?

The best answer here would be a surgeon who has performed the procedure hundreds of times, over the course of many years.

What type of anesthesia will I receive? Who will provide it?

Will you receive general, regional or local anesthesia

What will my recovery be like?

Will this procedure interfere with school, work, etc., and for how long? Can you be alone after the procedure, or should you make sure someone is there to help you? How can you best prepare your home for this procedure?

What will be the TOTAL cost of my procedure?

Is this something that makes sense to you financially at this point in your life?

Are there any risks?

Remember: there is NO SUCH THING as a risk-free procedure. Every procedure carries with it risks of potential complications.

Do you have hospital privileges?

It's important to ask this question because if something goes wrong during your procedure, it’s ideal for your doctor to keep treating you, since he/she knows your circumstances best.

Am I a good candidate for this procedure?

Be honest about your health, lifestyle, etc. The only person you're possibly hurting by not being 100% truthful is you.

Can I see some before and after photos?

Don’t be afraid to ask for a list of references as well. It’s helpful to speak to the plastic surgeon's past patients who have had the procedures you’re considering. If the surgeon is proud of his/her past work, he/she will be eager to share results with you.

In Closing

There are so many questions to ask, so many surgeons to chose from. In addition to getting the “right” answers, make sure that the plastic surgeon you choose, since you’re going to be spending quite a bit of time with him or her, is someone that you feel comfortable with. Good luck!
