Question: What were popular baby names in the 1910s?

Answer: The 1910s are well known for child labor, worker issues and World War I. It was a time of strife and hard work - for everyone. Baby names were not something that most people gave as much thought to as we do today. Many children were simply given names of older family members or whatever name came to mind after the baby was born.

At this point in history, there were fewer names in use and each of the names used was of a greater volume.

Families had more children and religion played into the naming of children. You can still see a lot of Puritanical roots in the names used from this decade.

When choosing a name that reflects this era, many people will think of more flamboyant names, but this really was a time of down to earth goodness. So if you're trying to find a name as an author of a book, think about the characters that you are writing about - where they your average Jane or Joe? Then go for one of these popular baby names and not something that you think will fly better. Remember, the top names represent the names that more babies had in this time period based on birth certificate data.

What were the popular baby names in the 1910s? Here are the top twenty names for the girls and boys born in the 1910s:

Boy Baby Names

  1. John
  2. William
  3. James
  4. Robert
  5. Joseph
  6. George
  7. Charles
  8. Edward
  9. Frank
  10. Thomas
  11. Walter
  12. Harold
  13. Henry
  14. Paul
  15. Richard
  16. Raymond
  17. Albert
  1. Arthur
  2. Harry
  3. Donald

What surprised me about the boys names was that there are so many names on this list that are used today. When you look at a modern baby with one of these names, you don't think of it as being a name from 1910. You think of it was a modern name. Albert and Arthur are the standouts here for me.

Naming a boy these names now might have people asking if it's for a relative. Though I think the same would have been said for George 10-20 years ago and now it's making a nice comeback, even prior to Prince George's birth.

Girl Baby Names

  1. Mary
  2. Helen
  3. Dorothy
  4. Margaret
  5. Ruth
  6. Mildred
  7. Anna
  8. Elizabeth
  9. Frances
  10. Virginia
  11. Marie
  12. Evelyn
  13. Alice
  14. Florence
  15. Lillian
  16. Rose
  17. Irene
  18. Louise
  19. Edna
  20. Catherine

The girl names on this list are names that tend to feel a bit older, with only a few exceptions. Elizabeth is still name that is very high on the names of modern popular girls names. You will also see Catherine (Katherine) ranking highly, with Rose and versions of Lillian also doing well and holding their own. But try to name a girl Edna or Mildred and you will turn quite a few heads in modern times.
