Valentine's Day Goody Bags

My husband and I found out we were pregnant with our first baby on Jan. 28, 1999. We told our immediate family immediately. We were just too excited and have great faith that God gave us this baby & know that everything will be fine (meaning we didn't have to wait to tell). We planned to tell the rest of our family (my grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins) on Valentine's Day. So Feb.13, we planned a big family get together & my mom & I purchased tiny gifts (bibs, small baby food, bottles, socks, etc.) and put each in a small Valentine's bag. At the end of our meal, my mom passed out these bags (everyone got one and they were all different). And they all had to open at the same time. So, here they were saying things like, "Why do we need a bib?" "Why do we need baby food?" "What's this for?"......And then my mom burst out "We're gonna be grandparents!!!!" It was all really fun & exciting, but I think my mom had the most fun of all. We'll be married eight years when the baby's born, so we've all waited a really, really long time for this.

My husband and I found out we were pregnant one week before Easter. We decided to send Easter cards to everyone from the baby. We sent cards to Grandpa, Grandma, Aunt and Uncle. They were all signed from the baby. They were all thrilled and the greatest bonus was that they all called us; we didn't have to call anyone and give the news.

At work my husband sent an e-mail to his closest friends introducing a new member on the volleyball court; however, he/she wouldn't be of much assistance.

Christmas Ornament

At Christmas my mom had given us an ornament for the Christmas tree that read "Baby's First Christmas" so we could hang it next year on our tree. Well, when we found out about the twins, my fiancé called my mom right away at work to tell her the good news because he couldn't wait!! He called her direct number to her office and when she answered the phone he said, "Mom, remember that ornament you bought us for the baby next Christmas? Well, do you think you could possibly find another one exactly like it? We're going to need two of them...." I was listening on the other phone when I heard my mom repeatedly say with total joy in her voice, "Don't you tell me that, don't you tell me that!!" And then she started to shout it to all her employee's that her daughter was going to have twins!! She was so excited!! And then suddenly she said, "How in the world am I going to find another matching ornament like that one!!?? I bought that months ago!!" We both laughed and told her we were just kidding. If one of our babies turns out to be a girl, we are giving her my mom's name as her middle name to honor my mom. My fiancé lost his mom 3 years ago. He and his mother were very close! We have decided that, if we have a girl, our daughters' first name will be his mom's middle name. She will honor both of her grandma's.

I love grandpa!

My husband and I found out we were going to have a baby a few weeks before Christmas 1996. We decided to wait until after we saw my doctor who confirmed my pregnancy and gave us a due date. We wanted to tell my husband's parents in a special way so we bought two bibs. One said "I Love Grandma" and the other "I Love Grandpa". We put the bibs in Christmas bags and asked them to open them at the same time. They were in shock at first and then we all started to cry. That night my husband's parents took pictures of themselves holding the bibs up to their necks and a big smile on their faces.

I hid a package containing a bib and a positive pregnancy test in the woods behind the store we worked at together. I made him go on a "treasure hunt" to find the package. He was so thrilled to see the positive pregnancy test. Later we found out we were having twins - even better!

Baby Dolls

My husband and I found out we were expecting on Halloween of 1998. As my family lives in another state, we wanted to wait to tell them of the new arrival until we could see them in person, which would be during the Christmas holidays, just in time to be through with the first trimester. Several years ago I gave both my mother and mother-in-law toll-painted heart frames with dowels running through the centers on which you could place little toll-painted dolls, personalized with the names of each of their grandchildren. To break the news, we ordered an (as yet) unpersonalized boy and girl doll for each grandmother and placed them in their stockings when we opened presents with my husband's family and then, two days later, with mine; it was fun to watch the wheels turn in their minds while they figured out just what we were telling them. Both cried, and we were grateful to share a wonderful personal experience with our families as we announced this new life.

I told my family about my pregnancy on Mother's Day. It was the first grandchild to be born into our family. With everyone gathered around the dinner table, I presented my Mom with an ice-cream cake from Baskin Robins that said: "Happy Mom's Day Grandma!" I will never forget the look on her face and everyone else's as they all wanted to read what was making us cry. It made for an extra special Mother's day that year.

When we told my mother in law that I was pregnant with our 3rd. I typed her a letter from the baby. And put how excited his or her brother and sister was excited about his/her arrival. She had to read it twice before she REALLY understood what it meant.

Joy From Sorrow

We found out we were pregnant just after Christmas 1998. We planned on telling our families around Valentine's Day. Unfortunately, my husband's grandfather suddenly got quite ill in the last part of January, and the doctors told us he probably would not recover. Since he and my husband were always quite close, and since Mike was the only grandson, Mike decided to tell him in the hospital. Mike told him our news, and asked him to keep our little secret. Two days later, grandpa died.

After the funeral, everyone was sitting around, teary eyed, and reminiscing about grandpa, when Mike stood up and said, "A few days ago, when I was visiting grandpa in the hospital, I asked grandpa if he could keep a secret. Grandpa said "sure" so I told him. Then grandpa said,"That's wonderful! I'm so happy for you and Nancy".

Well it didn't take long for everyone to figure out what we were alluding to, and there wasn't a dry eye in the house. Mike's grandma was especially happy, and she said we really brightened the otherwise sad day for her.

It was a very touching moment.
