Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States with about 1-in-4 deaths attributable to the disease every year. More than 20 years ago, 23 men and women came to Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, a cardiac surgeon and researcher at the Cleveland Clinic, out of desperation. Each had just had a heart attack and were told that things didn't look good. It was then that Dr. Esselstyn began a 20-year study of the impact of diet on heart disease, the results from which inspired his New York Times best-selling book, Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease.

Book Overview: Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease by Dr. Esselstyn

Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn's groundbreaking book Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, is based upon his 20-year nutritional study with heart disease patients, which was the longest study of its kind. In the book, Dr. Esselstyn argues that conventional medicine, the field of cardiology in particular, has continuously failed patients by focusing on the development of treatments that focus only on the symptoms of cardiovascular disease, not the underlying cause(s).

What Dr. Esselstyn set out to prove with his study was that heart disease can be prevented and reversed with diet. The results of the study were incredible and provided the evidence needed to prove that the American heart disease epidemic could be eliminated forever, if only we all were willing to change the way we eat.

The book begins with the story of his research project on reversing heart disease, then goes into detail about the plant-based, oil-free diet that can not only prevent heart disease, but reverse it.

Expert Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease Book Review

The idea behind Dr. Esselstyn's diet is simple: we can make a person "heart-attack proof" by keeping their cholesterol below 150 by changing what they eat. But the diet changes required are not easy feat for the average American. Dr. Esselstyn advocates a strict vegetarian diet with no fish, dairy, nuts, or oils.

The diet may sound extreme, but he has documented that this approach can not only stop heart disease from getting worse, it can actually reverse it in severely ill patients. In fact, the book actually contains photos of medical scans that prove the positive effects of the diet on heart disease patients. To make the strict diet more approachable, the book also contains lots of recipes and meal ideas for making the diet work. Dr. Esselstyn also provides easy summaries of the "rules" of the diet.

The book covers the story of those patients, the changes they made and the data that proves their hearts have healed and become healthier. Dr. Esselstyn also provides a host of tips, recipes and suggestions for eating well on his diet.

The Bottom Line

For anyone who has suffered a heart attack or fears heart attacks in the future, this book has the answer. No matter how big of a deviation from the standard American diet Dr. Esselstyn's diet is, no favorite food is worth risking a long and healthy life.

Dr. Esselstyn's diet not only stops further heart damage, it can actually reverse heart disease. If you have had a heart attack, I cannot recommend this book enough. Follow the diet and your chances for a long, healthy, happy life go way up.
