Be Wary if an Asthma Coach Does Not Ask These Questions

If you are considering a health or wellness coach to help with your asthma and overall health you will likely have some questions for them. However, there are a number of questions you should expect to be asked of you. If they are not, you may want to consider if this coach is a good fit for you.

What Are Your Goals?

It’s important that your health coach understands what you want to accomplish by working with them.

Everybody wants to be happier, breathe better, look better, move better, and feel better! However, your coach should ask questions about your specific goals and the time horizon are you looking to achieve those goals.

Without realistic goals achievable in a realistic time frame, you ultimately risk failure. A really good coach helps you break down your long-term goals into shorter, achievable ones. Your coach will then help you map the goals onto specific behaviors that move you towards the final goal over the course of your relationship. Your coach is also an accountability partner along the way to see how successful the program is.

Make sure that the goals developed are really your goals. A big red flag is a coach who tries to assign their own goals or priorities to you. While an asthma action plan has the same components no matter who is developing it, it’s your choice to monitor symptoms or peak flows- not your coach’s or your doctor’s.

A coach should not give you a standard plan or advice just because it works for their other clients unless it is congruent with your goals and objectives.

What Is Your Control Like Today?

Since you have asthma, your asthma control is really important. Your asthma coach needs to understand this even if you are seeking exercise coaching, relationship help, breathing training, or weight loss advice.

A big part of my asthma coaching practice is making sure that patients understand the components of their asthma action plan and make sure that it fits within their lifestyle. Without a really good action plan, you are at a significant disadvantage. It does no good for me or the patient if I ask them to create a symptom diary and they don’t have the time or don’t see the value in that exercise. Likewise, I often encourage and help my coaching clients begin a journaling program if it fits their needs. However, beginning journaling is not always an easy process.

How Active Are You?

Activity level is important too. Not only is decreased activity a potential sign of poor asthma control but it impacts how much patients needing to lose weight can eat in their diet.

“Do you understand that this won’t be a linear process?”

Most patients seeking asthma coaching or health coaching have made a number of attempts at getting unstuck in whatever area they are experiencing problems. Most patients will experience some progress like they are able to run a mile, make changes in their diet, or begin a meditation or breathing exercise program.

When the benefit plateaus, they become frustrated and often either give up or go to some sort of extreme diet or exercise program instead of celebrating their modest success. This is where a health coach can help and get them over their hump or look to see where their efforts may lead to the biggest benefit.
