Reversing Diabetes Is Key to Reducing Cancer Risk

If you have type 2 diabetes, you should be aware you can become non-diabetic by eating a high-nutrient diet.

Controlling your blood sugar with drugs, while continuing to eat the diet that caused it, can turn out to be a formula for disaster. People with type 2 diabetes have increased circulating insulin, which is not fixed with drugs that lower blood glucose. This metabolic situation not only increases heart attack death, but also increases cancer deaths.

Many do not realize type 2 diabetes is usually reversible and resolvable, and how important it is to do so.

Insulin increases appetite and can cause significant weight gain, making the patient more diabetic. Usually, as time passes, their condition worsens and they require more and more medication leading to a greater cancer risk. Insulin is a growth-promoting hormone, and in excess can directly promote tumor growth by binding to the receptor for insulin-like growth factor, or IGF-1.

How the Wrong Diet Leads to Disease

Even in people without diabetes, diets high in sugars and white flour increase the risk of cancers because of their impact on blood glucose and insulin response. There is much evidence supporting that chronic exposure to diets rich in refined carbohydrates may act directly to promote cancer.

People without diabetes who have chronically elevated glucose levels because of their high glycemic diets are also at a higher risk of colorectal cancer. Foods, such as sugar and products made with white flour produce dangerous spikes in blood glucose and consequently result in higher insulin production. Diets that include large quantities of these types of high glycemic load (GL) foods increase the risk of several cancers. A meta-analysis of many studies found a 26 percent increase in colorectal cancer risk in people who consumed the most high glycemic load foods in their diets.

So whether you have diabetes or not, one thing is clear: The best diet for preventing or reversing type 2 diabetes (as well as the most lifespan promoting in type 1 diabetes) is also the best diet for cancer protection.
