Saint Patrick's Day Crafts - Shamrock Decorations

Why buy St. Patrick's Day decorations when you can make them with kids? These St. Patrick's Day decorations are so easy and fun to make, you'll want to make a whole bunch with your kids to hang all around the house.

Gather your materials to make the hanging shamrock decorations.

To make this St. Patrick's Day shamrock garland, you will need the following supplies:

  • lightweight card stock paper or construction paper in shades of green
  • metallic origami paper in assorted colors (pick out the green). (Note: If you cannot find origami papers, simply use green card stock or construction paper instead.)
  • pencil
  • scissors
  • hole puncher
  • green fabric ribbon
  • Scotch tape

Draw a continous, concentric circle, starting from the center.

Starting in the center, make a widening, continuous circle that go outward, keeping the lines as parallel as possible. (See photo.)

This will serve as your streamer from which the shamrock will hang.

Cut along the lines.

Take your scissors and cut along the lines, starting from the outside and working your way around to the center.

Here is what your cut streamer will look like.

When you have finished cutting along the lines, your streamer will look like this. (Note: Cut out the square angles so that you end up with a circle (see photo).

Next, punch a hole in the center of your center circle.

Use your hole puncher to make a hole in the center of your small inner circle.

Thread a piece of ribbon through the hole and tie it off.

Cut a piece of thin ribbon about 8 to 12 inches long and thread it through the hole. Tie the ends together to make a loop. This loop will be used to hang your St. Patrick's Day decoration when it's finished.

Fold an edge of green card stock and draw a heart.

Next, fold an edge of green card stock paper about 2 inches wide. Draw a heart half about 2 inches tall. Cut out the heart shape.

Draw and cut out additional hearts.

Take the heart shape you just cut out and use it as a template to trace around to make additional hearts of the same size and shape. (This will give your shamrock leaves symmetry and a neat appearance.) Make as many as you need, keeping in mind that you need 3 hearts for each shamrock.) Cut out a stem.

Glue the hearts together to form shamrocks.

With your glue stick, paste the hearts together to form shamrocks. Add the stems and let dry.

Hang your shamrock decorations.
