What were you doing before developing the 3 Minute Egg?
Before I recognized the Eggs were my dharma, I'd tried a lot of career paths. In reverse order; I tried my hand at writing screenplays, played my hand at professional poker, cut my hand designing/building custom cabinets and furniture, and lived hand to mouth as an artist (painter).

What’s your yoga background?
I've been doing yoga off and on since college (1990-91).

My first teachers were Kundalini yogis and I studied with them before I even knew different kinds of yoga existed! They were amazing and they simultaneously opened my mind and changed my life.

What was the inspiration for your block?
The main thing that brought me back to the mat ten years after college was back pain. I'd done a lot of work and I'd done a lot of play and I'd done a lot of damage to my back. I had a hard time keeping up with the fast-paced flow, so I tried practicing yoga with DVDs at home. This is where I discovered the blocks. I thought they were great... till I created the Egg.

How does it improve upon the traditional block?
Yoga blocks do a great job of raising the floor, but their shape has absolutely no correlation to the human form. Nor do they adjust to the ever-changing needs of the body as our practice evolves. By lengthening, lowering, and curving the profile of the block into an Egg, I was able to give my body the exact the amount of support it needs in an infinite number of applications.

When I need more height, it's very easy to add Eggs. They stack well and I'm still able to benefit from the comfort of the curves.

Describe the experience of getting this company off the ground. What has the response been to the product and how does that make you feel?
I've been swimming in the deep waters of the yoga world for over 7 years and I still feel like I'm just getting this company off the ground.

I'm not, of course. It's a hovercraft. I recall being exhausted by my first yoga conferences because so much time was spent justifying the shape of the Egg and trying to get people to think outside the blocks! Rectangular yoga blocks had been the status quo for so long that nobody ever thought of changing them. Now my Eggs are used all over the world and when people see them they say things like, "I've heard about these and always wanted to try them," or "I bought these from you last year and I love them!" It's beyond gratifying and at the same time incredibly humbling. Of course I think the Yoga Eggs are amazing. Otherwise I wouldn't spend so much time and energy making them available to people. But the most fulfilling thing is that I made them because I needed help, I shared them because they helped me, and they're loved because they're helping so many others.

Rapid Fire Round!

When did you know you were hooked on yoga?
I got hooked on yoga during my first class. I walked in my usual angry self, and left a bit calmer and happier.

This transformation continues to happen little by little.

Favorite and/or least favorite pose and why.
I have a love/hate relationship with almost all poses. I love them for how they make me feel and, well, I wouldn't actually say I hate them but they sure do make me work hard when I'm doing them right! If I had to choose my favorite, though, it would be Supta Baddha Konasana supported on Eggs. It just doesn't get any better than that.

What other kinds of exercise do you do?
When I'm not doing yoga, I ride my mountain bike, hike, or swim. But it's not as glamorous as it sounds. I don't do nearly enough of any of those things.
