He had no friends, he seldom spoke,
And no one in turn ever spoke to him

I am a rock,
I am an island.
I’ve built walls,
A fortress steep and mighty.

"Sounds of Silence" produced not one song about solitude but two. The lyrics of "I am a rock" reflect shutting yourself off from the world to protect yourself from pain. While avoidance such as this may reduce pain in the short-term, in the long term it can contribute to anxiety.

People are strange when you're a stranger
Faces look ugly when you're alone
Women seem wicked when you're unwanted
Streets are uneven when you're down

The only one that I have ever known
Don't know where it goes

Everybody calls me the quiet one
You can see, but you can't hear me
Everybody calls me the quiet one
You can try, but you can't get near me

John Entwistle wrote this song to tell the world, and The Who, that he was not who he appeared to be. Many people with SAD may appear more quiet or introverted than they actually are.

Now I never make a sound
I just do what I've been told
I really don't want them to come around

"Every Day is Exactly the Same" is about living a life without joy or sorrow; without ups or downs. It is the experience of many with social anxiety who live isolated and compartmentalized lives.
