Squatty Potty Review

At first glance, the Squatty Potty is a bit odd. It looks like a white stool that doesn’t offer much in the way of anything useful. It is an oddly shaped stool at that. The middle section, where one would normally stand or sit, is missing. This is because this stool is meant to do one thing – help you squat.

The original intent of the Squatty Potty was for a person to be able to sit on the toilet and yet still assume a natural squatting position.

This aids in the alignment of your colon and rectum, making it easier to go to the bathroom. This was meant as a way to prevent and/or alleviate the symptoms of hemorrhoids and constipation, without drugs and medical intervention.

The Squatty Potty sits mildly in front of your toilet. It also uses the cut-out area as a way to hug next to the toilet when not in use. As the mom of many, I worry about clutter in my bathroom. This was very helpful at not creating clutter. There is nothing I hate more than stumbling to the bathroom in the dark night, only to trip on something in the bathroom. The Squatty Potty has not been in my way.

When the Squatty Potty arrived for use to check it out, my kids were terribly excited. All of a sudden, everyone had to go to the bathroom. They actually fought over it. In the end, the reviews were positive. Though one of my children gave me these words of advice: “Don’t use the Squatty Potty if you just have to pee.” So there you have it, be careful.

If you pee while using the Squatty Potty, it might get messy.

So why am I reviewing the Squatty Potty for a pregnancy website? Well, there are a couple of reasons. The first of which is that pregnant women tend to have more issues with constipation and hemorrhoids in pregnancy. Good practices in the bathroom can help prevent or alleviate these issues.

Secondly, squatting is great for labor.

The Squatty Potty can be used as a labor aid. You can use it exactly the way that you would use it when you are in the bathroom while sitting on the toilet. This is often a great place to labor. You have something holding you up, you’re using gravity, and if you’re sitting on a toilet. chances are you are going to relax your bottom more easily because that’s what we are trained to do in this situation. The Squatty Potty is great for all of these reasons.

That said, the Squatty Potty also makes a great stand-alone birth stool. While the base is skid proof, the one caution would be that the portion you’d sit on is generally designed for you to use your feet, not your bottom. A few towels or well-placed pillows will make it a bit more comfortable. There are actually hospitals who are using this for exactly that purpose.

The Squatty Potty cleans easily. Heck, you could simply put it in the shower for a quick rinse if you wanted to do that. It’s that easy. It also comes in white and has two sizes, depending on your height. The cost is one of the most amazing things about the Squatty Potty. Unlike so many things available, this one won’t break the bank.

You can even afford to have one for upstairs and one for downstairs if you so choose. It really is that useful and economical.  After the baby comes, it can revert back to its typical use, but I also have my eye on it as a potential stool for nursing. I’ll have to let you know how that works.
